Sooo...the little fidgety flies in my plants are....
Comments (5)If they are flying they are probably fungus gnats ( do they look like fruit flies?)and unless you have a really bad infestation they are only annoying. The flys don't damage the plants but their larvae may eat at the roots. I can usually control by letting the soil surface dry out between waterings. Bt that is used to kill mosquitos can also be added to the watering can if you are really worried or annoyed. It's hard to find the liquid except in very expensive sizes so I use a product called 'Mosquito Dunks' just crumble them into the water Here is a link that might be useful: dunks...See MoreLittle flies infesting my house from my can o worms help!
Comments (7)Not easy. Some things to try, but all basically cut down the numbers as opposed to an instant cure. - Smaller feedings, or give them a break from feeding altogether (have bedding they can munch on though). Also freeze (then thaw) feedings before adding so they get processed faster. Worst thing is food hanging around for weeks. - Bury the feedings under some VC. Doesn't have to be that deep as long as it covers everything, just don't want it open air. Loose shirt might not work unless it's really tight, loosely on top doesn't really count as if there's any gaps they can crawl in easily. - If they are coming from the top tray, try a mesh lid. Fine mesh overtop instead of the plastic one, held in place with bungie cord. Seals better than the plastic lid (at least the lids I've seen). Also stops the wife from seeing them flying around :). You can then lift up a corner and stick a vacuum inside without letting them all out (as the plastic lid would). Tap it around a bit to get the suckers to fly up and into the vacuum of death. You can do that daily to make sure they don't get old enough to lay more eggs. With time you can drastically reduce the numbers flying around....See MoreHelp ID'g these pesky little "flying ants" on my Salvia!
Comments (12)I think the best way to figure out what they are is to observe them a little. If they seem to be around constantly and hovering around the soil and base of your plant then they are fungus gnats. If they are only around in large swarms occasionally (usually after a rain storm and it warms up) then they are most likely ants. If they don't fit either of those descriptions then they are probably small wasps. Best case scenario is that they are wasps which are usually not harmful but good for your garden and you should leave them alone. Ants and gnats can be a minor irritation or a big problem, it just depends really because in some situations they can kill your plants but if your plant is of a good size and healthy then I wouldn't worry too much....See MoreLittle black flying (and walking) insects in my bathroom
Comments (5)Logician, I think you nailed it. I forgot about a begonia I put temporarily on a windowsill in the laundry area. This morning the gnats were all over the walls and window by the begonia. No plants in the upstairs bathroom, but it's located just above the laundry area. The gnats seem to have disappeared from the bathroom. I found some dead ones last night, but no sign of them this morning. I'll get some yellow sticky traps for downstairs. Thank you!...See Morestumps
