Plant nursery in Tampa/St. Pete/ANYWHERE nearby?

Hi all,

I am originally from Orlando where we have a number of wonderful plant nurseries but I just transferred to USF and am trying to outfit my apartment balcony (my first free-reign *private* gardening space EVER!!!) with a number of hanging plants and possibly taro and whatever else suits my fancy....

but, alas, I am having issues finding somewhere with a large selection of plants without ending up at Kmart or Target or Lowes... maybe just aesthetically or economically I'd rather shop at a family/local store.

Any suggestions?

I have a car which gets awesome gas mileage and I drive approximately .3 miles to school and back during the day... so if you have a good place but its a tiny hike away I'm not opposed. ;-)

Manny's on the River, which is on Hillsborough, just west of the bridge over the river, between Florida and Rome. True Value Nursery on Sligh, between Florida and Armenia.
Jene's Tropicals, in St Pete, bu I can't give direcions to that one. It's google-able though. Oh, and don't forget that USF has a botalical garden with a shop. They have especially good begonias.
Those are my local favorites. And welcome to Tampa.

Kerby's in Seffner. Definitely worth the drive to the east side of Tampa, especially if you are looking for any type of fruit or nut tree. Lots of other goodies too. While there, go to Exotic Plumeria just around the corner (or down a couple blocks and around the corner).

Big fan of Duncheon's Nursery in Land 'o Lakes. It's a bit of a hike for me (In Palm Harbor), but when spring and summer set in, they've got a wonderful variety of plants. Off the top of my head, some of plants I've purchased there: Peacock Ginger, Devil's Trumpet, Purple Firespike, Variegated Clerodendrum, some heretofore (to me) unseen Coleus, pentas, butterfly bush, etc. etc. Great prices, wide selection of ornamentals, standards, common landscaping plants, and a good variety of hanging plants and vines. Tom, I have never seen these in Home Depot, Lowes or Walmart. I have seen them a lot in local, private nurseries and in all of the Ace nurseries here in Jax. If you get desperate, I can pick some up and ship them to you, but even that gets iffy this time of the year with the heat and mail, even with two-day priority mail. Let me know. Tampa Bay area nurseries - mix/sell a decent bulk potting mix?

I'm not sure what you have in mind for using the potting soil exactly, but I have my own special mix made that I use for my rare cycads. With plants that are worth what these are worth, getting the best soil is well worth the extra money. You mentioned drainage, well, that is the most important thing in growing cycads. That, and having a mix that doesn't break down real fast and get mucky over time. Also, I don't want insects getting in my mix (ants and termites love pine bark)and I don't want my pH to go acid in a year. My mix is mainly Canadian peat, well point sand (very coarse sand, almost small rock)I do use cypress saw dust and also perlite. If you can't find anything good, I am 2 minutes off I-4 in Lakeland and have my soil professionally made for me by a place that has a computer mixing it and I buy 30 yards at a time. If you are just wanting to put up some things, I could spare 1/2 a yard or something like that.

It is in St. Petersburg, down on the waterfront. It is an incredible museum. They have 96 of his works and he is the only artist shown in the museum and it is the number one attraction in St. Petersburg. The best thing about visiting there are the docents. They are incredible! They must take a test on all 96 paintings and know them all. However, on the hour-long tours, they show you maybe 20-25 of them and tell you what they know. There are lots of symbolism and double-imagery and it helps if a docent explains. So, you could take three different tours in the same day and hear completely different things each time. The paintings are fascinating and Dali was a genius. I loved every minute of it. See link below. Just by chance, we attended one of their Coffee with a Curator lectures. The lecturer was their head of security and the talk was on Art Theft. I learned SO much! Art is the third-highest stolen object after money and weapons. As amber said, welcome to Tampa, and USF. I'm a recent graduate myself.

Anyway, you have some good suggestions going so far,
especially the botanical gardens on campus. You will probably find lots of stuff perfect for balcony space there.

You might try Treemart, which is on Nebraska between Fletcher and Fowler. If you want to go a bit further, there are a ton of nurseries on Gunn highway north of Citrus Park. Tampa Bay Nursery, which is out there, is one of my favorites.
