No soil, that is small parts of the barks. If I add any fine partical it will flow to the bottum and cause a perched water table. That size bark is good to use by itself. I use this as a soilless medium in 2 gal containers with a hydroponic fertilizer program. I would never add any fine partical to this ever. Homehydro, Thanks for the tip on the perlite, lucky me I have some now. Don't you use hydrogen peroxide? I do at all times, every water and fertilize I put H2o2 in the water before my nutes. When using H2o2 if you smell the roots, they will smell life fresh radishes. Compaired to the brown roots in a none treated system. Please look up how to use it all time in your system because once you see you will never stop using it. I am all drain to waste, no pumps so fine particals that come of the bark will not matter. I have only tapla to thank over in the container forum for inspiring me. Now I am waiting for the same place I got it to get more of the mulch in.

If you're heart is set on using the Rubbermaid container and the pump you have, all you really need is a lawn-type sprinkler or holes drilled in the outlet pipe from the pump -- just anything that will scatter the water around the inside top of the container. Start your seeds in sand or soil first, then transplant the "seedlings" into perlite inside net pots. You can drill the lid to the Rubbermaid container the right size using a hole saw and a drill motor, then just plop the net pots into the holes, add the seedlings and plant nutrient and let 'er rip! I use a similar setup in my "cloners". I merely direct the outlet spray from the pump to the underside of the lid and drill holes all along the edge of the plastic lid into which I drop my net pots. The net pots contain perlite and one seedling each. The water from the pump hits the lid and sprays in a circular pattern wetting each of the net pots. Use whatever size pot you think will accommodate your particular plant. Run the pump 24/7 if cloning or at least once every hour or so for regular growing. Just don't let the net pots actually dry out. It doesn't get much simpler than that.

I haven't used NFT, areoponics or flood and drain (yet). I have however had good results with DWC (bubble bucket) systems. I am looking at setting up a flood an drain system this winter so I to would be interested in other folks input. FWIW

Thanks for your replies. Actually, I don't want one for the difficult-to-root cuttings, I want to make cuttings of a variety of plants and no longer have access to a propagation house. How did you find the handling of the rooted cuttings as far as potting up went? What I mean is, I have only ever potted up cuttings that have been rooted in a cutting mix (course sand, a little peat and some perlite) (and later, at a different place, perlite and peat, 7:1 ratio). And I would like to know how easy to difficult it is to handle roots of cuttings made in such an enviroment as an areoponic set up. Did the roots 'stand alone' or did they try to clog together as though withdrawn from water?
