Too much water..

Gardenweb.com was excellent. Houzz bought it and changed it to this Post+Comment sillyness, buried it in their marketing site, and made it easier for people to accidentally resurrect dead posts. I'm not suggesting people didn't manage to resurrect dead posts in the old site. It was just much rarer and usually done by a bot that generally got fixed. It sometimes seems that anything that works well just must get damaged by some change. It seems any change to just about anything is almost always a change for the worse.

I agree that ALL big box store plants should be repotted immediately. Their soil is only designed to make them lighter for shipping. Having worked in commercial greenhouses, I know they are pushed way too fast with strong fertilizers to get them ready for market in a short time. They take awhile to adjust to a good potting soil and normal care, meaning they may just "sit" for awhile, especially if they are outgrowing a growth retardant (poinsettias are sprayed heavily with this). Most herbs are easy to grow from seed, so I do suggest that.
