There is plenty of quality information on these forums and many, many very experienced members that share that information freely. If you want to help, fine, but linking to a long dissertation on the subject is not what most folks come here for. If that's what they are looking for, there are many recognized horticultural websites that can provide in-depth info. And to be honest, some of the info you present in your linked blog posts is of dubious accuracy.

Sheryl, I live at the top of the Okanagan valley in Canada. I use to think that hostas had to have shade, period. I finally listened to Ken from the forum and experimented with more and more sun. Three years ago I planted about 25 hostas on the west side of the house on a three level reatining wall. It is VERY hot there. We're on a hill so the sun doesn't even go down until 9:30 during the height of the summer. Most of July and part of Aug are between 90 and 100 degrees. I think the key is Water and lots of it. I have a dripper system, one tiny thing on each plant from a central hose. When it's really hot I just leave in on for days. The only plant I've moved is Diana Remembered which both summers got very ratty looking. Other than that, the rest are fine. The ones I'm growing there are: Hyacynthina Pauls Glory Iron Gate Glamour (or Delight - one of the BEST) Captain Kirk Zounds Golden Tiara Old Glory Gemini Moon August Moon Fragrant Bouquet Stained Glass Lakeside April Snow Love Pat (it stayed blue all year with a bit of a rose shading it) Hoosier Dome Halcyon Golden Scepter Erromena Antioch June (faboulous here) Elegans Julie Morss Dee's Golden Jewel Yellow River Fried Green tomatoes Albo Marginata Undulata (last two partly under a fir tree) This year I added: Royal Standard Touch of Class Marilyn Katie Q Red Dragon Magic Fire Theos Blue Kiwi Sunshine Abiqua Drinking Gourd Fire Opal I expect they'll do fine. There are a number of very sun tolerant hostas. Generally, those with gold or highly variegated foliage develop their best coloring in at least part sun (morning sun is ideal), while the blues or solid greens are extremely shade tolerant and will maintain their color in virtually total shade. All of my hostas received at least part sun and did very well, but I attribute a lot of that to very good soil conditions. Of the blues, 'Halcyon', 'Elegans', 'Krossa Regal' and 'Blue Angel' are supposed to have maximum sun tolerance.

Yeah Melissa I know about the other post....I think I actually had commented on it as well.. hey bkay... look at your younger leaves now... if you have some... I'm assuming you do have some fresher growth... whats it look like? Melissa is from MN... she's used to a 2 month long growing season, shorter days and cooler summers...I've got golds now she would swear up and down were the most infected hostas she'd ever seen... the older top leaves look terrible... but down inside the new growth is beautifully perfect...mottling is a symptom of HVX.. yes indeed.. BUT.. mottling can also be caused simply by cell damage... from extreme sun/heat... kinda like a runny nose... most every flu comes with a runny nose... but just because someone has a runny nose, doesn't mean its the flu. Do you go to the doctor every time you have a runny nose? Should you spend 25 of your hard earned USD on a test strip everytime you see a little mottling on a hosta? I really hope you think not...lol....Seriously if I was rich... I'd test all my hostas for the hell of it... but if your like me.. doing that is not in the budget... especially when another division of SnS is a cheap buy... if you were close to a good hosta farm.. you could even arrange to buy a large division of multiple eyes more than likely... sum and substance is very common... agdia strips are very expensive and not 100 percent fool proof... there's always user error.. and in chemical test you would want to test twice and hope to get the same result twice... so thats like 50 bucks... you ever known a girl to get pregnant and take several DIY prego tests... and then still be crazy about getting to the doctor to take a real one to know for sure?
