If anyone's path goes through Louisville, Ky on the way to St Louis please stop by and visit. After last spring and summer I have no idea how our place will look but you are welcome.

If you want to add a day I'll set up some garden visits locally.

Highjack, seems you understand these processes very well must have grown orchids indoors and maybe violets? I was referring to terrestrial orchids, most of which do have either necessary or important symbiotic soil organism relationships. We work to collect and save local wild flowers and orchids some of which are becoming quite rare. I was attempting to give Andrea specific instructions about how to do hosta by a proven method without going into all the reasons why. Although as you know I appreciate discussions about the details and appreciate that you broadened the discussion. When applying these methods to easy outdoor plants soil especially clay or clay soils improves the cation exchange capacity. All these conditions can be controlled carefully on indoor plants while outdoors plants can be starved during rainy periods when nutrients can be leached out since one would not want to over feed in these conditions. Solite is expanded shale (older clay), if you need or want a quantity this can be substituted, call concrete producers it is used to make light-weight concrete. We used so much in our growing operation that we bought it in semi-load quantities. "When switching a plant to s/h, you want the pot tall enough the roots do not extend into the water well but an inch or two above." highjack Hosta do not suffer from wet feet as some plants like a yew would. I know you went on to cover this. "The clay pellets will keep condensation in the pellets to keep moisture on them, but not swimming in the water." Apologies, Morpheus has been doing battle with a new robot at work. Morpheus lost. Normal sample depth is 4, so I'm spinning the numbers down to account for that. Some it doesn't impact. Some it does. It's no big deal to do the math. EC of 29 may look heavy, but I suspect it isn't really as high as it seems. The high calcium levels are generating a false result and your EC is actually closer to 20 It could be a very fine silt. It could be a clay with a bit of sand. It could be silt with clay. In your locale and eyeballing it? Silt with modest clay, but most of your neighbors will claim they have heavy clay because it's sticky from mistreatment (including construction), floods easily, and has trouble growing things (as most soils do when abused). Repeat after me: "It's not the soil, it's the soil's owner." And the construction company. Blame them, too. By all means, remove the rocks if you wish. You can have the soil raked and graded but that's pricey. Me? I crawled the soil with buckets. It took months but... pH 8.0: High, but not particularly so. This is generated by a bit of excess calcium, higher-end magnesium, and some excess sodium. Personally, I'd wait and see where it goes over time. It's no bar to a great lawn, and I really don't expect it to go down very much over time, but... Sulfur 22: Normal. I wouldn't mind seeing it go up and you certainly have plenty of margin; higher S levels will tend to lower your pH, so I have no worries about using sulfates in your soil. Organic matter 1.7%: Low. On my scale, this is in the "Poor" range. Always mulch mow your new lawn, mow in any available fall leaves you might get. Once the soil is balanced, I'd feed organically when you can. Phosphorus 103: In a high pH soil, phosphorus isn't so available, and at 8.0, phosphorus is not so available as compared to the optimal pH of 6.2 to 6.7. While not deficient, it is low, and I'd actually like to see P levels of 300 or so in this soil. When you feed for this next year--including putting in your new lawn--use any off-the-shelf starter fertilizer that's handy. Except for the end-of-year November feeding, keep that up. The last one, near ground freeze, use high N and low everything else--phosphorus will just run off, which is not good for the water supply and a huge waste of money anyway. Calcium 74%: Surprisingly not very high, but I think the EC is being miscalculated in the first place due to the free calcium in the mix so therefore... Let's just call it high, readjust our numbers, say that no calcium is needed, and move on. Magnesium 19.8%: This is what's killing your pH, for the most part, and it's not something you can do much about for now. Just let rainfall slowly leach it out, if it can, and in a few years we'll see if we can do something about it if not--using a pile of gypsum. Which I don't want to do right now because that's calcium sulfate. See my commentary on high calcium above. It won't hurt anything, but with a new lawn going in, let's not stress the poor thing. Potassium 0.9%: Not as bad as it looks, but still low. I'm not going to stress a new lawn, but I'd suggest locating some potassium sulfate online and buying it. I'll make recommendations for next spring. Sodium 1.8%: High, but not really a problem. I think rainfall will tend to take it out and I'm hopeful it's an artifact of construction. If not, and once the lawn is established, gypsum will get rid of it. It's also influencing your pH and, although the number is low, sodium is a very strong influencer of it. Table it for now, though. Minor elements: Boron is very low, but it's not something we need to fiddle with right now as grasses aren't particularly boron-sensitive. Iron is low, which in a high-pH environment is going to lead to very pale colors. Learn the word "Milorganite" because it's something you're going to end up using a lot of--it's a nice organic feeding you can apply, even at the same time as starter, to give a gentle feeding and 4% iron. If you want and if your budget allows. Other elements are OK and can be tabled for now, at least. Recommendations: At lawn installation (August, September-ish): Feed with starter fertilizer. October (lawn age about 4-5 weeks): Feed with starter fertilizer. Winterizer (when lawn stops growth; in MO, probably November 1-10th): Feed with any high nitrogen, low everything else fertilizer. Late April 2020: Apply 2 pounds of potassium sulfate per thousand square feet. Memorial Day 2020: Feed with starter fertilizer. Apply 2 pounds of potassium sulfate per thousand square feet.

Cemeteries in the St. Louis area

I certainly have no experipence in your area, but I think jeri is right. I’ve never seen much of any plants in the old cemeteries in my state aside from a big wichuriana of some sort in the Old Dutch cemetery in sleepy hollow. I have found many interesting old roses (and Irises!) in yards in old neighborhoods. In the spring I’ve always got my eyes peeled to see what’s growing while I’m driving or riding the bike.

Hopefully...we'll see, though, June is turning into a busy, busy month.

We're planning on going to the Midwest Convention in Chicago, too.

I can't make it to the WSM this year. Too many irons in the fire this month! I was really hoping to be there and I will be in spirit.I had a blast last year and will be there next year come HOHW! St Louis will be my first full convention as I was in Indy before the actual convention with the A.H.G.A. and had to return before the real show began. Champaign is hosting the regional in 2009 and I am only an hour from there. I think that will be a blast also.
I am sure we will cross paths sometime this year. I am 90 minutes from St.Louis so if you would like to stop in on your way there or on your way home you are most welcome!

My DW is planning a trip to Louisville sometime this year to spend the night in some haunted sanitarium. If I get scared and start running like a BIG WUSSBAG can I come to your garden? "Somehow all of our vacations end up having something to do with Hostas!]I just can't stop it!!!! LOL!

LOL Denny... I'd be running too! But maybe if you see those ghosts & tell them you are "crazy" about hostas they might accept you as one of their own! Sounds like a fun trip.."Hosta Nuts tour Haunted Sanitarium" & plant a few friendship plants in the garden...;)~Dot

I have tried to tell mw DW that there is a "Ghost Spirit" right out in the back yard but she fails to see the humor in that.. Right after she watched "Ghost Hunters" and "Paranormal State" she was hooked. It's going to be difficult to deal with a house of two addictions but after 27 years together I am sure we will find a way!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting Denny. He later introduced me to esther_opal. I chatted with them for a bit. They are a hoot! EO gave me a lot of words of wisdom on growing hosta in water. Later I met Josh but didn't get to chat too long since I was already in the vendor room 3 hours.haha He and his mom are super nice. I was able to pick out a lot of cool stuff. I will try to get some pics up this weekend.

I'll miss this one too...still recovering from the new kitchen...which continued to replacing all the carpet with hardwood floors...new sofa..and some new Hosta this year!

But next year it's in Michigan and just a short drive...no flying...big trunk to bring home lots a Hosta and maybe see Ken's place too...

The Midwest Hosta Society convention for 2009 will be held June 11, 2009 in Champaign, IL. The 2008 Midwest convention is in Schaumburg, IL July 10-12 and the registration deadline is tomorrow. Here's a link.

Thanks for dropping by to visit me at the convention. It is always nice to put a face to a name( exception being Butch!)LOL! Maryann , I don't recall crossing paths with you. Was I in a daze ? I could have been a little tipsy from all of the "Hostatality juice" so if I did run in to you, and have forgotten , please forgive me! Zafo scored some nice plants and I think that they should send some pix so we can eyeball them! OOOHHH What Fun WE Had!! Hostas and new friends! Pretty close to heaven in my book!

I definitely scored some nice plants from Avalon Acres! I planned on putting up pics last night but was too wiped out after gardening in the 90 degree heat yesterday! ;) Today I am punishing myself more with going on a hosta garden tour. I will post some pics of my prizes from Avalon Acres tonight.

P.S. Thanks for the bonus Cirrus Clouds Denny!! I didnt even catch that until I looked at the receipt. You are the best!!

I was there sitting behind all the maples. Sure was a good time. I didn't put a face to an alias but if you stopped by, Thanks and a belated Hello!! It sure was fun talking hostas for 4 days. And yes Denny had some well grown hostas at very reasonable prices. I know Josh had very little to load up after the convention so sales must have been good for Him!
