Only Two today - and a Cicada

APPLE TART has bloomed since June 12th and has a couple left.

PLATINUM PALETTE CALYPSO CORAL is one I just bought at a garden center because it had a scape. My $5 bargain.

I still have other stuff blooming. Pink Velour Crape Myrtle, Knockout Roses, and Caryopteris (Blue Mist Spirea)

Someone was wondering about those brown bug shells they saw. Here is a couple of pictures of a CICADA that I heard flapping its wings as I was walking in the lawn.

Things are winding down fast.

Yikes, Vickie, I know you are going to gross some people out with the blow up closeup picture of the Cicada.

Your Crepe Myrtle looks good. I only have one myself and its blooming now. Knockout roses are always blooming, which is what makes them great.

Your $5.00 bargain daylily turned out good. I think its a very pretty one. I like APPLE TART and since its been blooming for a long time, that makes it even better yet.

Vickie, I really dislike the cicadas but at least now folks will know what they look like. Gross!! Your crepe Myrtle looks great. My blooms are faltering now. Your bargain dl looks great but are you pleased? That's what it's all about. Yay for your knockout roses too and AT looks great after blooming so long!! Ellie

Before you make a service call, have you tried unplugging the DW and letting it sit for a minute before plugging it back in? That may require you to pull it out, but that's a couple of screws on either side and a scoot out. With anything electronic, it's worth seeing if it had a hicup and will reset first. Don't know anything about them in particular, but it kind of sounds like the control panel is going if it doesn't reset. I would expect that to be one of the more expensive repairs -- along with the pump or motor. If you do call to renew, see if you can't get them to honor the no waiting period (before you tell them you have a service call -- do that in another call. Later.) Worth a try. Besides, the thing probably wouldn't have worked any better if you had gone to start the DW before midnight. Hope you get it worked out. Worst case, you have a large drying rack for a while.

Your blooms are very pretty. I can't decide if the cicada is just really ugly or really interesting. --- What interesting markings it has. Never saw one after it comes out of the shell. That was a bargain on the pink DL, and your Crepe Myrtle is really pretty, all we see around here are rose of sharon, the Myrtle is so much nicer.

When you're getting down to those last few you have a deep appreciation for the beauty of whatever is out there blooming in the garden. APPLE TART is very bright and cheery. Love the Crape Myrtle!! Glad to see you still have some blooms to share.

Thanks, Rita. I love they myrtles because they bloom late and I am going to try to train the Pink Velour into a small tree. So that means next February I have to get the shears out and trim it up a little higher. APPLE TART is such a wonder plant for me, I am so happy with it.

Ellie, I like the peachy pinks, so I am happy with it, although it wasn't blooming when I picked it out and I think it's prettier than the picture on the label. I did not get pictures of the other two that I bought yet, but hope to soon.

Cindy, Although the Rose of Sharon has a longer bloom time for me, the Myrtles are so pretty in bloom they are worth it.

Thanks, Linda. They sure are few and far between these days and I do appreciate them even more. I do have a couple of rebloom scapes. Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!! BUTTERED POPCORN and WITCH STITCHERY decided to grace me with one scape each. BP has never, ever, rebloomed for me, so it must be the rain this year.

I just realized why the cicada might have been on the ground. The second picture shows that it's missing part of its wing. Awwww.

I think the poor Cicada is actually very interesting :)I have never seen one before-just heard them. Is it true they hatch only every 16 yrs? Are the brown shells you are talking about the ones you see that looks somewhat like a mud wasp nest??

wow, your APPLE TART is gorgeous.I love the Crepe Myrtle too. I have 2 of them here, One is pink and one is purple.

wishforspring, I think they are pretty cool and I love to listen to them. The brown empty shell is shaped like the cicada and has a crack in the top where the adult molted from. We have the annual cicadas, but it is much louder when we get the 13 or 17 year cicadas. Check out the cool video of the molting process at the link below.

Here is an explanation of the life cycle of cicadas from The University of Michigan Museum of Zoology. "All but a few cicada species have multiple-year life cycles, most commonly 2-8 years (de Boer and Duffels 1996). In most cicada species, adults can be found every year because the population is not developmentally synchronized; these are often called "annual" cicada species. In contrast, populations of the periodical cicada species are synchronized, so that almost all of them mature into adults in the same year. The fact that periodical cicadas remain locked together in time is made even more amazing by their extremely long life-cycles of 13 or 17 years". Hi Jean, and thanks. Apple Tart has been such a treat for me this year. I finally feel like I have found a long bloomer for my garden. I am going to have to check out the purple Crape Myrtle. Most of mine are in the pink range, but I would love to have a purple one.

I like the Platinum Palette Daylilies, I have Pink Whispers, Freedome Ring and Brave Heart, they do well here. Like you I bought them cheap at local garden centers. I really like your CALYPSO CORAL.
