The flower you didn't like
Comments (33)I didn't care too much for the Cerinthe either....not very showy at all. Edges were crisping out on me too; very ugly, but I let them go long enough to get seeds. Vinidium (African Daisy) 'Jaffa Ice'....don't get me wrong; the flowers are gorgeous, but the plants themselves took up way too much room at 3' tall and almost as wide! Also I've noticed the white ones are not as prolific blooming as the orange. Drippy....Only planted out one Cactus Zinnia and pretty glad one was all I had! Not a very flattering plant. Lime....Profusion Cherry color for me lasts a LONG time and eventually petals turns buff beige with a dark brown eye; I rather like it once it turns too! Wish I still had pictures. Fairydancer....I cut my Maltese Cross back too..hard and they've been re-blooming for awhile now. gardenluv and stage_rat....My wintersown Nigella 4 years ago were just like that; maybe just a little taller at 6". I don't think they transplant well, but all the self-sown ones every year since have been MUCH better! If you haven't yanked them, let them self-sow or sprinkle the seed where you want them. Sometimes they come up in fall and winter over. 1black61...Don't know which Nicotiana you grew, but I've had my Nicotiana alata (white) get 5' tall but they were not just single stemmed; VERY fragrant evening and cloudy day bloomers. Bad quality camera phone picture, but these Clearwing Hummingbird Moths came by the droves to drink from these! Normally they are only growing to about 3'. Mine have been blooming for about a month....See MoreWhat do you like Now that you didn't like Before?
Comments (26)For years I didn't care for potato chips or French fries though I liked potatoes prepared other ways, but the past few years there are times I crave them now. It's a combination of the oil/grease & salt. Rather than a certain food, I find that I now like specific dishes a lot more than I used to: stews, pot roast, sauerkraut, sausage, biscuits & gravy (notice the interest in heavy fat foods?) A kind of sad thing, I LOVED chocolate to the point of once buying & eating a whole BOX of Hershey's bars, & going to chocolate conventions for a few years. Now I've lost my taste for chocolate; I don't hate it, but I don't care if I have it or not, & when I do have a piece, it doesn't taste all that great. Calories I don't have to worry about, I suppose. It's also given me empathy for older people who have lost their taste for food....See MoreWhat would you do if your kitchen didn't have a pantry?
Comments (58)>>...didn't have a pantry?>> Well, I wouldn't have any room to store any food, LOL. I cook a lot so I have doubles and even triples of every size cookware I use, plus 25 yrs ago I moved in with six sets of dinnerware and three sets of flatware. I have three separate spice drawers because I cook everything from Indian to Chinese to French and half a dozen other cuisines. It was my first (and so far only, thank goodness) opportunity to design a kitchen, so I crammed in all the storage I could. We were handicapped by only having 1 wall of uppers. One half-wall holds the frig and is open to the LR and DR. The other wall has floor-to-ceiling windows to capture a great hillside view: I worked with graph paper and managed to get everything behind doors. It was about a week before I realized I had FORGOTTEN to put in any food storage! I did have three narrow closets in the DR (a former bedrm) for the upright freezer, the microwave and wine stemware, and the table linens/vacuum/stepladder. But nothing for dried pasta, Asian condiments, dried mushrooms, cans of soup, etc. So.....we had fortunately not placed the order for the kitchen cabs yet. Two 18" wide pantry units were hastily added, and placed in-between the DR and kitchen. The top doors hide fixed shelves, the bottom doors hide rollouts. All are height adjustable, heavy-duty. I'd never had a pantry before. Now I'm spoiled and can't imagine living w/o one! A walk-in would be nice, but there's only two of us so not really needed. Ten years later I had a handyman built us a custom storage unit for our indoor back porch area. It was such a pain carrying the vacuum up and down stairs, I finally broke down and bought a second upright. I don't have any good photos of it, but half is deep enough for the vacuum and BBQ tools, about 12". The other half has shallow, 7" shelves that store dry goods like spray paints (for DH's hobby), DW tablets, Brita filters, vacuum cleaner bags, etc....See MoreRoses you didn't like, but now you do
Comments (12)Kublakan, Yes. I think I met you and SoFla briefly at Cool's Roses. I should have paid closer attention to those of you who were there - I didn't realize the wealth of knowledge and the helpfulness of the people that I was meeting. Duh. Shame on me. Looking back I should have realized. I think it was SoFla that actually posted the sale date of Cool Roses.... I didn't even know Cool existed until she was kind enough to list it on this forum. Now you are doing the same of Nelson's. I have not been to Nelsons. I did not know they existed. I will check them out, though unlike you I live only 10 minutes from Cool's Roses, so it might be hard to get me to travel very far to make a purchase. I had been buying bare root roses at Sam's, Costco's and Kmart - treating them as annuals because of the root stock issue. I also purchase own root roses from mail order at Chamblees. So far the own roots have held up, but I am sure over time the nematodes will get them..... though I keep amending my soil. It is probably a losing battle though. The hard part for me is I see all of these roses that I want and they don't necessarily come on fortuniana rootstock. Guess I am a kid in a candy store, knowing I will get a tummy ache and not caring until I actually eat all the candy and have to live with the consequences. Yes, I laminate over the poor dying rose, even though I knew it wasn't going to live..... Hopefully, now that I found places that carry fortuniana root stock I can curb my "appetite" to only those that will have a longer and healthier life. Does Nelson's carry a wider variety or a different variety of roses than Cool's? Someone also mentioned KandM and they seem to have a few different varieties..... I kind of want the Black Baccara - just because. Again, Thanks for all your input...See Moredigdirt2
