Help on Native Plant ID

My neighbour gave me some seeds of a plant which she refers to as Florida Bed Bugs. Apparently it is an orange cosmo/marigold like flower, 4-5 feet tall. So far it is about 12" high and looks a lot like ragweed, I have no flowers yet. It is supposedly a native plant to Florida - what part, not sure, her parents spend the winters up there. Just trying to get a name so I can google it. thanks!

Perhaps it is tithonia. I am not sure it is a native, but it grows wonderful well. ;o)

Sounds like it might be tithonia rotundifolia (Mexican Hat). It is not a native but is really nice, attracts butterflies and reseeds. Grows like a weed.

Thank you for your input! Flowers sure seem to put them in the genus, though I'm still hitting a road block on the species. Will have to keep searching!

Funny, the flowers look something like what she planted last year but the foliage I have growing is nothing like the pic! I have buds on a few plants so maybe by weeks end I will have a flower I can take a picture of. thanks.
