Hi, I have cut back several daylilies that have struggled through the heat and drought. They are coming back and looking good. I also am using a low nitrogen, high phosphorus fertilizer to help with root growth, now that we have gotten some good rains and the temps have dropped. I have been wanting to transplant some of my lilies all summer, but didn't dare. Tomorrow I will start to move them. So I say go ahead, cut them back to about 5", they should be okay.

I've been cutting mine back because they look so rough. I figured it's less that the poor plant had to try to water. I need to get some fertilizer, but the shop I stopped at the other day was out and I didn't make it to the other place on the other side of town yet-but I'm not sure if they even carry it. It's more of a feed and grain/farm supplies. A couple that had tried to go dormant are perking back up after a few rains (finally). I'm wondering about winter too. The birds are already flocking and starting to disappear. I hope they are just looking for food and not telling us something.
