Lemon Verbena -- how to overwinter in 7b Atlanta?

I tried lemon verbena (Aloysia citrodora syn. triphylla) this year, knowing it was frost tender. It didn't do much in one summer, and now I'm wondering if there is any way to overwinter it.

I'm tired of seeing this poast on top, so I'm adding a message and it will move on down.

As for the lemon verbena, I am going to dig it up and see if it will make it in the basement, which does have some sunlight.

Try asking some local gardeners how they overwinter tender plants in your zone.

I just brought my potted lemon verbena plant into the house last night. Haven't decided whether or not to cut it back now or wait until spring. If I leave it, the leaves gradually dry up and fall off in my cold cellar. A bit messy, but I can live with it.

I would like to know what to do with a lemon verbena plant that is now in my garden bed outside. I live in Vancouver, BC Canada and it's getting nippy out. I don't know the zone here. At this late time of the year, can I move it into a pot? It has grown from a small wee thing into a very unwieldy plant with long spindly branches going off in different directions. It can't stay in the small garden bed but I don't know if it would survive moving now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated? Is it possible to add photos of this here? I also don't know what to do about the long spindly branches... thanks again.

Take your thumbnail and scrape against the bark/stem. If there is still green there it will probably grow out again, if it is dry and crispy I would go lemon verbena shopping. I am in in zone 6, where I have had the base overwinter in mild winters against the house but most years it is killed outside. My wife's aunt in a tropical country has had it grow into almost a small tree form. I usually try to overwinter some in pots. If you grow it potted that should be fine on a sunny windowsill or a cool garage. If the plant is too big you can try to take some nice young cuttings from the growing tips towards the end of summer. They usually root fairly easily.

I grow it in pots, since it will not survive the winter outdoors in 7B. I bring the pots in the house before frost, kept watered through the winter in a sunny room. After last frost, they go back out, are well watered and cut back. It takes little time before they are growing like mad and bushy. LV is by far the very best lemony herb for tea or just about anything. We use plenty all summer long off of maybe 5 or 6 bushes, with plenty to spare to dry for various herbal tea blends with mints and other tea herbs.

I'm in Raleigh NC which is also zone 7b and I leave mine outside in the ground and it has come back every year. It does suffer for it and it can be slow to emerge in the spring but it has proven hardy for me. It is also easy from cuttings so I take cuttings in the early summer and keep a few of them inside the house in the winter just in case we have a really bad cold snap. They lose their leaves in the winter even when inside so you would think they are dead but they aren't.
