Please advise on cutting lavender back in fall...

Hi,

I have a huge lavender, it's probably 3-4' tall and 4' wide. I have this lavender for several years now, transplanted everytime I moved, and they survived!

However, I see they have a pretty long "leggy" brown part, it's probably 1 feet or so.

I was told that I should not cut back below where green starts. However, one of my friend recently told me that I can actually cut them back to the ground level, so I won't have too much brown part, and it will grow upright rather than drooping under its own weight (pls see pix).

ãI would like to try cutting back to the ground (maybe 1 foot from ground) this fall if it won't kill the plant.

I would appreciate any advices on it.

Thanks!
