100 Year Old Mango Tree - How often does fruit bloom?

Hi Folks,
First time poster here. We moved into a house four years ago with a huge mango tree. We were told it was about 100 years old from a tree service. Maybe a Carrie mango?

The last three years it has always grown mangos. Last year it must have dropped close to 500 mangos. They were yummy and a pain to clean up.

This year maybe five mangos have dropped. It did flower in the spring. Can't see to many on the tree. The leaves are dropping like crazy. New leaves are growing. I have to rake twice week for the last month. Yuck.

Pics are included. The pic with the red leaves was just taken. The other is just to show her glory.

So my question is do mango trees have fruit cycles? Or is the end near for our old friend?

Holy man, I had no idea mango trees could be so big! I am no help to you, but I hope your old gal is just a lil under the weather and is back to her glory days soon!

We don't water it, as we get a mild amount of rain here. Not too much, but just enough to keep the soil a little moist. Our soil pH is 6.5. We have horrible clay soil that, when it gets dry, is like a rock. We don't have any soil imbalances that I know about. We tried some miracle-gro fruit tree fertilizer stakes that we got from our local nursery. The leaves don't have any mottling or spots or other imperfections. They are a light green color, as most plum tree leaves are. The bigger one (GD) got the same fruit tree stakes but to no avail. Its leaves have cedar rust, but it is because our neighbors have juniper and cedar trees. It never affected the 6 huge and beautiful McIntosh and GD-Mutsu Hybrid trees we had at our old house, which is about 2 miles away from our current house with the same weather and soil conditions, and the trees were in the exact same amount of sun. There are no visible signs of pest or disease on any of the trees. the only things that have ever bothered them are japanese beetles, which we have only had twice, so that doesn't seem to be the problem. Our average temperature throughout the year is around 79. We get around 40 inches of rain per year and all the trees are in full-partial sun, leaning more towards full. What I am wondering is, do nurseries that supply local nurseries and garden stores with fruit trees, put some substance on/in the trees to force them to produce fruit? It seems like every tree i have ever had, produces fruit the very first year I plant it, then it starts up again 2-3 years later. Do you know the answer to this? Thanks again. Lydia

Mike: I am not certain just what you are looking for in the way of helpful advice. Can you save the tree? I don't know, but if it is important to you it is worth a try. Surely, you can try to prune it down, and that might rejuvenate it, but pruning is a series of judgment calls that you make while you are up in the tree, and I can't do that from here. If the objective is renovation, it might be best to prune in the dormant season, which might encourage healthy new growth. Summer pruning tends to slow growth. If the tree is out of balance, removing wood from the heavy side would seem the sensible thing to do. Since your photo does not provide the perspective of the whole tree, I can't get a feel for just how large it is, but it appears you will have quite a job getting up there. Use a good, sharp pruning saw, preferably something like the Corona razor tooth saw, that you can carry easily while you move around the tree. On this tree, I would probably spread the pruning over two and possibly three dormant seasons. But you have to start somewhere. For what it's worth, I did some dormant top and thinning pruning to some 100 year old trees out in Western Maryland several years ago, and they came back strongly and resumed apple production. Diseases are a different issue, and if they are a problem you will have to identify them and figure out how to deal with them. If you are concerned that the tree might die and want to preserve the variety, take a few scions in the dormant season, store them in refrigeration, then try grafting to a new rootstock in spring. I've had Hamamelis flower from seed in three years. But they are still small plants and the impact isn't huge. Unless you're into the native species (which aren't as spectacular as the x intermedia types), you'd never want a seed grown witchhazel anyway. The flowers are usually much smaller and less colorful than the cultivars. No one sells seedlings even if you wanted them. If you want a dogwood on the East Coast, you'll need an anthracnose resistant variety. "Appalachian Spring" is the cultivar I hear most often for this. Whether purchased locally or by mail-order, it will be a vegetatively produced clone and will bloom quickly, if the plant is in good health. Redbuds could be from seed or from vegetatively produced sources. A seed grown redbud grows fast and blooms young. Not a huge issue. ForestFarm is great. I like their selection and their plants are usually pretty good quality. But their plants are small and shipping to the East Coast is very expensive. If I can find a plant from a local nursery, it's usually a better all around value to buy it there. For something rare, ForestFarm is a great resource. Scott

Just thought I'd put a period to my earlier optimistic thoughts regarding Pugs' question. In early June I thought for sure the 2nd impetuous flush of tiny mangos on my Glenn and Valencia Pride trees would mature into large, delicious beauties. Alas, not one single survivor from those unique ( for me ) late blooms. All just quickly dropped off the trees soon after. In fact the only ripe mangos I harvested was the bumper 1st bloom from my old reliable Glenn. Still have my freezer half full of frozen slices from that huge crop, the last few dropping off around July 10th. Another nice development was how the new Maha Chinook has gone bananas after my tip pruning a few months ago. This is the pic of the MC taken this morning,..slightly amazing when I recall that the tree was just a straight skinny stick with maybe 8 - 10 leaves on it just 4 months ago. I hope some of you other mango maniacs out there had better luck with those late blooms, and if not, hey, there's always next spring. ( smile )

Yes, some mango trees get huge. We try to keep ours pruned shorter. We don't get so many fruit that way that we can't use. BTW, you can pick them when they are showing some blush and ripen them in the house. You don't have to wait until they fall.
The tree looks healthy and it's got new growth. There were some other posts that this year wasn't the best for mangoes. Check them out. :o)

In commercial orchards they are usually replaced at about 40 years, so you have an OLD one.

They can be cyclical. Again, in an orchard they aren't all in a low cycle at once so it's not an issue unless the weather was bad.

Maybe a nice hard pruning job will kick it into gear...but it will take at least 2-3 years after a VERY hard prune to start fruiting again...if it were my tree I would cut appx. half of the height...but that's just me. Shorter fruit trees are a lot easier to manage...either way Good luck!! Its probably just an off year...some fruit trees do this...

In our neighborhood (an old mango grove from the 30's), none of the old trees had good fruit. One very young tree has some, one old one had tons of fruit that dropped off small and rotten, but most didn't set fruit at all, including our old reliable 35 year old tree. I'm leaning toward whitefly causing the problem, but I have nothing scientific to back that up. Whitefly has shown up big time here in the past couple years.

I just came back from the mango festival at the Fairchild gardens and they had a mango clinic there to ask questions. One of the volunteers told me that if I want the trees to fruit, keep it at a small size, he said not tall like a palm. I saw an incredible amount of mangoes there. Great mango season!

Wow, more good replies. It could be white fly. Our neighbor across the street had them in the spring on their Christmas palms. They wiped them out and I don't see any on our palms. Mango tree is to tall for me to see anything up close. We live in the St. Pete area so the white flys are jus arriving here.

Our mangos tasted good but I'm no mango expert; never had one before. They could be rotten compared to younger fruit for all I know.

It's not a Carrie. Carrie is a semi-dwarf tree. Most of the "Old" mango trees are usually Haden's or Haden seedlings as the number of varieties available in the US were fairly was limited at the time and Haden was the dominant variety. Haden is also a large tree as well.

Mango trees can live for 300 years, but in most sub-tropical climates in the USA a 50 year freeze will knock a lot of them out. Mangos depending on variety are inconsistent bearers and weather plays a large part from year to year. Mango flowers are damaged or killed below 40 degrees.

I've seen some ancient mangos in SW Florida. It's amazing that they are such a long-lived tree.
