Thanks for the advice Tropical. Very helpfull, and reasurring. My windmill palm is mostly in full sun all day. Theres a big maple tree on the street that shades it a couple of hours a day. Is the full sun exposoure why the new fronds are growing so slow? And yes, one frond looks like its opening already and is much shorter than the older ones. Also, some one told me that i should not prune the dead fronds intil the new ones come out. Not really sure what to do? My Windmill palm has gotten a lot of attention in my nieborhood. Mostly because i live in the Bronx, and im almost positive theres not many people growing palms here. Theres not much of anything growing here!!! Cant wait for next spring!! If my windmill survives the winter i want to try a Pindo palm. Im pretty handy so i plan i building a plexiglass green house to fit around it for the winter. Going to use christmas lights for heat when it drops below 20. Now all i have to buy is a parrot and train it to sit in the tree all day. This is the garden i just recently planted. all native plants, but they got me started with my green thumb. Hopefully as i learn more can replace some of the shrubs with bannana and more tropical stuff.

My Tumbling Toms went nuts in just a week or so, despite the cool cloudy weather. This variety is probably a keeper! In fact, I took two cuttings to make another hanging basket. Hope the taste is good! Forget about flowers in a hanging basket, lol...grow tomatoes! Will post photos soon of the cuttings, and my other 10 tomato varieties. Gosh that's alot...I cannot believe I ended up with so many, especially in a condo, LOL! May 18 May 26

Susie I concur with some of the others, got to the doctor ASAP. Both my folks had terrible bouts with shingles in areas you describe. Mom said it felt like something was rubbing aginst her skin irritating it. Better safe than sorry. As for bamboo, I am just not crazy about it, but if you like the look, be sure and go for the clumping kind. The spreading kind is a beast, I don't care what anyone says about "controlling" it! I teach about controlling it and I don't think you want to spend your free time in the yard fussing with your bamboo, do you? Maybe you just love it and don't mind, but otherwise I would think twice about it, it's not carefree. I planted a wild rose bush against my fence. It grew fantastically, and soon I was NOT very popular with my neighbors as my wild rose runners invaded her garden. And it was constant maintenance to keep them out of my own beds in areas I didn't want rose bush. The suckers seemed to invade almost overnight. A week or two off and I had to go to war to re-establish my borders. To me, it's just not worth it. There are lots of options for a living fence. That said, I don't know anything about the clumping kind. I'd try and check some out at Morris Arboretum or Longwood Gardens or some such place. Here' an article on the bamboos from that "You Bet Your Garden" guy from Philly. Sounds like they might have some at Fairmount Park although I have no idea where. Giant leaved, piecrust edge, all green is Jade Cascade. Huge Round leaved, with lighter margins (needs to color up yet) is Lady Isobel Barnett. I usually trim back the foliage on some of the other perennials so the hostas can be seen best, but since it just stopped raining this morning, I will have to trim things back tonight. I enjoy having the mixed perennial look and aspire to the cottage style of gardening, so I don't always mind some crowding/intermingling of plant types. I am aslo not one of the "garden in 3's" people either. I like to have one of everything Ilike best, then I just combine from there.

super .. thank god for rainy days... its when we get the most pix ...

in photobucket.. on upload .... in the new uploader.. opt for a smaller pic ... the 15 inch screen seems about right ...

i like the big pix for the detail ... but the screen wrap is maddening ...

and try to add the names ..... practice makes perfect .... cant wait for the next rain .. lol ..

Nice pics,TDM! You have one of the biggest Bleeding Hearts plants I've ever seen. Mine has already bloomed and is fading away already. I also like combining all kinds of plants,including my native Trilliums.Phil

Hey Greenguy,
I am sure you are right after looking at your pic. Any suggestions as to what mine might be ? It looks to be the reverse of what you have. If anyone comes up with suggestions, I can probably decipher which one it is. When we moved here 2 years ago, I brought some of my favorite hostas for this small shady nook. Apparently the tag blew away this winter. I know I brought Capt. Kirk, I just have to find him now ! In the meantime, what else could this hosta be ? Thanks to everyone for their comments !

Great pics, everything looks so lush.

Where did you get the fencing you have along the path? I have some stuff I got at HD, it is ok to keep the dogs out but is not as attractive as yours.

The fencing came from Wal Mart ($3.96 a section) It is metal and hooks together. It needed to be tall enough to discourage my Great Dane puppy (1 yr old and 155lbs) from walking over it. He loves to dig holes and generally squash plants, so gardening this spring has been a challenge. I use 4 ft deer netting to surround my cottage garden, and try to grow things lushly so he doesn't see any mulch spaces to walk on/dig/etc.

You know it could be OBL ! I did have that at my old house, but I know it grows very large, so I hope I wouldn't have put it at the front of the border.... We'll see how big it gets.. This is LEAP year for these hostas !
