New beds

I thought I'd show some pics of my new daylily beds. These ones house some of my seedlings. The clay here is to hard for me to even get the shovel in so DH tilled it and we added lots of composted straw.

Great job with the tilling and I like the straight edge added by the timber border. The finished product looks so nice and a great new daylily bed. I love the country setting too. It looks so pretty there.

AJ/Maria, You really have many choices. I myself am very fond of peonies and have some in my rose beds. Before making selections, consider these points. Are you looking for plants that will be enhance the roses by blooming when the roses are at their peak spring flush (late spring/early summer; possibly also early fall)? Or would you rather have plants that will be flowering when the roses are "resting" to give the bed interest at that time? You can do both, but that will take a big bed. Most perennials are in bloom for a few weeks, not most of the summer like annuals can be. Then make sure you are not getting something invasive that you will constantly be trying to control. You don't want the companions to become competitors. Here in my climate alstroemaria is like that, but I think it may be too tender for you. Soapwart, evening primrose, and some of the artemesias come to my mind as thugs; there are others. Finally you will want to make sure that the plants you place there have about the same care requirements as do the roses -- the same kind of watering and fertilizing needs as well as the same need for full sun. Stephen Scanniello who sometimes posts on this forum has a book out called Rose Companions that you might find full of good ideas. Making new beds on top of old beds

Hi TXEB It is from the original bed (beds) but only in a roundabout way. When I weed the beds I transport the result away from the scene in a wheelbarrow.In addition there is a lot of soil (+ more weeds) that I scrape shallowly from between the beds with a sharpish spade ( a bit like a big push hoe). So all this stuff is left in a large and ever increasing heap well away from the beds (in the orchard as it happens). After a long time (next year normally) I recover this stuff which has by now turnd into something resembling topsoil. It is nice stuff but I don't think it is particularly rich and so I add stable manure from my donkeys' dung which comes with a fair bit of bedding (hay as often as not). I used to add these 2 products separately but have now taken to premixing them as it is not a lot of extra work and I feel like I can do a better ,easier and perhaps more satisfactory job (we'll see). I do the premixing with a hand held cultivato that I feel allows me to give it all a good mix (a bit like pastry making! The ratio of OM to stable manure is just how I feel at the time but it would normally be 1 to 1 So far this year I have been pleased with the results but it has not been a panacea as there are some crops that remain beyond my abilities to be successful with (it hasn't helped with the disaster that are my peas although the coriander ,rocket , lettuces, fennel bulbs, spinach,kale,runner beans have been very good -I wouldn't try it with carrots though) I cannot vouch for the hygiene of this process but as the materials all tend to be about a year old (the stable manure not always) then I don't think recontamination is a real problem.

How about abutilon bella? It's a relative of the hibiscus that likes part shade. I have mine growing under my oaks on the northeast side of my house and they like it there. They are tropicals, so I don't think they'll survive the winter. I have some seeds from them - don't know if they'll germinate or not, but worth a shot. Purple oxalis is a possibility. Galanthus would also be very pretty tucked into little spots here and there. If you want any mona lavender cuttings I was going to try my hand at propagating the ones I have. Failing all that, there's always begonias and impatiens.

I've grown tomatoes in 6h of sun and they've done really well until fungus hit them, which I've wondered if the sunlight largely being afternoon sun has contributed to that. No morning sun=morning dew not drying all morning. Other than that, the plants have always been fairly healthy though. I would do as suggested above. You may be surprised at the production you get out of the 6h bed. It would be an interesting experiment. I'm not sure how warm it gets in the San Francisco area, but if it tends to get too hot where you live the 6h could be beneficial.

Thanks everyone. The rail fence is a 'corral' we put in after buying the farm. Now we have a family picnic in it every fall. It wasn't planned for that but it worked out nicely. It will also be home to my other daylilies.

That is very nice. Looks really bice with the daylilies and other flowers you have,and I like that rail fence, too.Wish I had one around my yard to keep the deer out.Your seedlings are really pretty, too.Your soil sounds like mine. Right now most of my yard is like cement, its so hard.Can forget about digging in it.Some of my front yard is fenced in,as it was put up years ago for a little dog to be able to go outside.When it was no longer used for a dog, then I dug it up and added everything I could possibly think of to it, and have planted flowers in it for years,and the soil is still no good.

I love the corral, such a charming setting! The daylilies already look good there but will be even better next year, but sure to show us some pictures!

Thanks everyone. I can't believe how fast the seedlings grew in the holding bed, you can hardly even see the soil! If they continue to grow that fast the new beds will be full next year. I still plan to move some lilies in there and plant some annuals next year but planning is fun isn't it? Now on to the next beds! Marg

Marg ~ I am not a jealous person but I am seriously envious of your space! Love the fact you are sharing it with us tho! I can live vicariously through them!!! I want a farm more than life itself and at the rate I am going with my addiction, I need one SOON! Keep the pics coming! I have daylilies coming today (I hope) that will go in with my irises for this winter. I'll post pics when they get planted. :) I am just loving this addiction and must learn so much more from you pros about breeding my own babies!! Would you like a sheltie puppy? Lol

Ginny, if I can hybridize so can you. It's so much fun waiting to see what your flower will look like. It also gets frustrating waiting, LOL, but it's worth it. I would love a pup but right now I have my hands full with my 2 Aussies. BTW, you need a farm to give your pups more room to run. Marg
