I have a lot of red daylilies, and since you will need a dormant, I'd suggest CHICAGO APACHE. It is a true red, and have not noticed any significant color changes. All reds do change somewhat in 100+ weather in full sun, but some to a much greater degree than others.

Of course, KENT'S FAVORITE TWO is my #1 choice, but it is evergreen, and I think your climate could be too cold for it.

They are both very reasonably priced.

Actually, I have quite a few evergreens that do very well for me. So, unless it is a very sensitive evergreen, it should be fine here. I never pay attention to EV, SemEV, or Dormant because they all do well here.
Thanks, I'll go look up Kent's Fav. Two. I'm not crazy about Chicago Apache (*ducking for punches*) I know it's a favorite, but the ones I've seen don't seem to open all the way and seems to only face upward. I may be completely wrong though.

Red Razzmatazz is a really good one. I believe it would be
less expensive than many others. A brilliant clear red with a small bright green thoat.

Aabba is a fantastic plant, blooms and blooms and blooms. A beautiful red and holds color well. It might be a bit
taller than you prefer but the plant itself is worth a bit
more height. Flowering lasts 4 to 6 weeks and the flowers
are quite large 5-6 inches.

If you want a late one, try August Flame - it is not pure
red, there is a bit of orange in it. It lights up the whole garden.

ART IMPERIAL (makes a nice statement in a clump)

I have pictures of two of the "primary" red ones that have done well for me. They are also older, so shouldn't be too pricey.

BETTY FORD is the most stunning red I have in my garden, I truely love this one. An early blooming red I got from Olallie Gardens that I like very much is VT FREDS EARLY RED. There are so many lovely reds and you really can't go wqrong with your original choice either!

I agree with Chris that reds are hard to photograph and also about Betty Ford and Magic Carpet Ride...both are great plants here.

I love my oldie but goodie, Dixie Land Band. The small amount of yellow in the throat makes it look much redder than my other red daylily, which has a big yellow throat and looks rusty scarlet as a result.

Many great pictures of beautiful reds on this thread. My favorite is the picture of BETTY FORD and I still think she is my best red. I have MAN OF SORROWS, also pictured and mentioned but I never think of it as a red because it has too much lavender tones in it for me to call it red.

Karol calls MAN OF SORROWS "deep rose red" in her registration data, which is why I categorize it w/ the reds.

It does have some purple tones, though.

Not dissagreeing on your lumping it in with the reds. Just personally not thinking of it as red. MAN OF SORROWS has got to be in my top ten list of favorite daylilies here but if you ask me for a list of reds I would forget to mention it. If Karol calls it red then I guess its red as she gets to have the last word on that subject :-))

I love Chicago Apache. It's a true red, not a maroon red, and it's not a rebloomer, but has a long bloom period. I don't have any problems with mine not opening all the way.

Is Betty Ford a prolific bloomer?

Its a Florida daylily. Don't know that you can bring them up here and get prolific. Here in my garden, its average for a southern belle.

I love James Marsh which is an older one...not sure what is really "true red" kind like pinks it is subjective and then add all the variables of light, soil, zone....

I lean towards the darker ones and I need to get some that are a brighter red. I really want to add Ruby Spider in the next year.

I really like Chicago Apache and have never had a problem with it opening here--and it's still blooming now.

I agree that Kent's Favorite Two is a good one to grow. It is early here in the south.
Big Apple, Scarlet Orbit, Twist and Shout and Thin Man are a few more pretty reds.
If you are looking for a good mail order and would try Florida plants--Wynn's Daylily Garden has good prices. They send large fans. I do not think that you would be disappointed with ordering from them. They grow many Munsons.

The Man for reds = David Kirchhoff! And, no, I don't even have any of his yet. But I've seen BETTY FORD and others in my nearby AHS display garden, and they are stunners.

I also second floota on POINT OF VIEW, a Sanford Roberts. One of my top favs in my garden this year. LARGE and BRIGHT. Stunner.

The always and deservedly popular RUBY SPIDER. I'm in love with this one.

An older, very good red: POINCIANA REGAL. Good, good doer, dormant, I really like this one.

I saw HOLLY DANCER, which gonegardening mentioned, at clump strength in a region 3 summer meeting tour garden....one word = WOW!

One that was also a clump strength wowser, and that I have and can vouch for is the newer and still pricy RED SALLY, a Gossard beauty. Sunfast! (gonegardening & floota -- that was the eyecatching Gossard red in the Bange garden, wasn't it??? I forgot to write the name down.)

Yet another fab one at clump strength and, coincidentally, in the same tour garden as the two above, is Pat Cochenour's MYSTIC PIZZA....now that I think about it, I think you "need" that one!

Clump strength wowser but sounds like it'd be too short for what you want: REGENCY DANDY. In fact, that one and another you should look at, ROCKET BOOSTER, a Santa Lucia, tied for first place as best red.

One that I got yesterday at the club event and so can't say much about is ROYAL GUARDSMAN, a John Benz red. But I've never seen a Benz intro I haven't loved, and this one's registered as having 35 buds on 4 branches.

If I were to go through the little notebook I carry to gardens, I could list WAY too many reds. But say the word, and I'll do it. :)

The big red from Jamie Gossard that I noted at the Region 3 meeting was WAYNE FELGAR, a 2005 by Jamie. Is this the one you're thinking of?

Wow! The pictures are just stunning! I'm in red heaven! I think ACQUIRE THE FIRE is more of the color I'm looking for but CLEOPATRA'S JEWEL looks great too. I'll have to look up the ones lynxe suggested as well. (the one I 'need'!) LOL

When I Dream is one of my favorites

I saw APPLE TART pictured above and I would also like to recommend it even though I only bought it last year. It has increased nicely in that one year and most of the scapes had 4-way branching with about 25 buds. We had plenty of rain this year, so am not sure what it would do in a lean rain year.

FFO was June 12th and it still has about six blooms left on it because it put up recurrent scapes. It bloomed today and is another poly, but it wasn't open all the way at 6:30 this morning so am hoping to get a good picture after work. Sometimes it has a slight orangy cast to it at the end of the day, so am not sure if it's going to be what you are looking for.

Here's a pic of a bloom that polyed a few weeks ago. This is what I meant about it getting a little orangy.
