Are these zone 5 hardy - anyone growing them in zone 5?
Comments (2)Abies beshanzuensis - not in cultivation; likely zone 7 Abies squamata (Flaky Fir) - zone 5/6, but needs cool summers Calocedrus macrolepis - zone 8/9 Cupressus x arilosa ÂPendula - an invalid synonym of C. x notabilis (C. glabra x C. nootkatensis); probably zone 6 Cupressus glabra ÂGolden Pyramid - probably zone 6/7 Picea shirasawae ÂAlpine Blue - yes, should be zone 5, maybe 4 Pseudotsuga japonica - zone 7, possibly 6 Pseudotsuga gaussenii = P. sinensis var. gausenii - zone 7 or 8 Resin...See MoreShade herbs, zone 5a IN
Comments (2)I can second the chives and mint, both do well in shade for me. Also lemon verbena and lemon balm- lemon balm will be your bane if you don't contain it. I've had lovage, salad burnet, and chervil grow well in more shade. I've always grown my parsley in full sun, along with cilantro, so dunno about those in shade. gardengal seems to know better than I on that one. Dill is supposed to be OK in shade. I'm not sure about that. I grow it mostly in full sun, though a lot of it is in the "shady" understory of my tomatoes. Sweet woodruff can grow in some shade, but I haven't gotten around to putting that one into the gardens yet, lol....See MoreWinter hardy greenhouse for zone 5
Comments (6)zone 5 is about half the US ranging from MI down pretty far south ... give us a big city name.. zone is also minimum winter temp predicted at the single coldest day of the winter ... and what happens if its cloudy on that day.. which it usually is ... i dont understand how you can overcome that only relying on solar ... and keep in mind.. the coldest part of a winter day is night.. when there is no solar to heat with .... i think you have a lot of variables to think about before you decide on which particular house to buy ... starting with what you want to grow in it during winter ... im thinking in z5 with no heat.. at best.. you could use it to store dormant plants .... now if all you want to do is get an extra month of season on either side of winter.. then maybe it will suit that purpose ... ken...See MoreIs La Reine hardy in zone 5b?
Comments (7)Bellarosa, My La Reine is on order, still coming! Hoping it will enjoy its new home! It is a lovely rose! I am sure yours will love it’s pot! Keep pot near south side of home warm in snowy winter. Some people put pots indoors garagec during winter. I just put mine next to S Side of home moved for winter-I am zone 6 and they die back a little but canes make it through winter in Big clay pots. The closer to my home, the warmer & happier roses are in winter. Then I put them in desired locations in spring.Best Wishes! Pretty gorgeous!...See Moretheforgottenone1013 (SE MI zone 5b/6a)
