H. Fulva Kwanso Flore Pleno, if I am not mistaken.

Thanks, that's what I thought when I first started researching it but mine only have that one single extra petal in the center, and the throat is lime green with cream. Maybe they've mutated?? Does that even happen?

Sometimes they are not fully double.

'Kwanso' and 'Flore Pleno' are both distinct varieties of H. fulva, and are both consistently double. H. fulva has many varieties, and I think you have one of them. I agree, not the common 'ditch lily, but still H. fulva.

Here's a picture of my Kwanso. You can see how different they are!

I find that mine double more frequently and more so when they are over crowded and the ground is just thick with roots and rhisomes.

I just posted some of my daylilies, not many fancy names yet, but ... 3 yrs ago I dug up a group of 'ditch' daylily because it was deformed. Brought them home and just posted 2 samples of the deformed ditch lily. Even the babies are deformed. However, I have since seen other locations of 'ditch' daylilies that are also deformed, and assume it has something to do with road crews and snow removal. Your's is different from mine, but like I said, each is different.
(I'm new to uploading pictures so hope this is correct.

What you are calling deformed H. fulva 'Europa' looks very much like the double variety H. fulva 'Kwanso'.

I've never seen the ones you refer to, but I've lived on this road for over 30 years and the ditch lilies have always been here. However the ones 1/4 mile further aren't mutated. Thus the only difference is that the ones I dug up to see if they would repeat the same mutation, were in a bunch of poison ivy and the others are not. In fact, the ones I transplanted to my yard 25+ years ago are still normal wild daylilies. Some the mutated ones are triples or sometimes partially 4 layers.

OK, this is weird---I have only one blossom in my yard today and it looks just like daylily_dreamer's Kwanso. These all originated from the same little patch in my yard. I dug them up and divided them a couple of years ago but didn't get around to replanting them until the following spring. I actually left them in soil in a shallow, undrained plastic tub over the winter and most of the next summer. (I know, horrible. It was just very far down on a long to-do list.)

Anyway, they all survived fine, despite being in ice part of the winter! But maybe that affected the blossom color on some. Or maybe there were always two varieties in the bed and I never noticed. The bed had become shaded so they never bloomed much until I moved them.

There are no native, 'wild' daylilies. Daylilies are native to Asia and came to the US back in the 1800's or before. They have naturalized in the eastern part of the US.

The 'wild' or most common daylily called the ditch lily, roadside lily, tawny, tiger or orange daylily is Hemerocallis fulva 'Europa'. The fulva family has probably 20 different varieties to date. Two common double fulva varieties are 'Kwanso' and 'Flore Pleno'. Of all the fulva varieties, 'Europa' and 'Kwanso' are considered the most invasive.

Plug them into Google images and check them out.

Oh! I'll google them. Your note implies they did not mutate and are actually a different part of the family, like first cousins? If that is correct then, this cluster must have always been different than the others, not a mutation, as such. Since you say both are 'invasive' should I be digging them up out of the ditch and slowing down their invasion?

My aunt(87) says that when her son lived in France for several years, this was the national flower and cost $5. for every stem. Maybe we should ship them all back to France?
You're right, I never should have said 'wild' but naturalized, and since daylilies naturalize so easily (even sold because of this trait), does that mean that after I die and all the ones I have planted next to the road, if not removed by the new owners, will eventually be called naturalized and thus invasive?

I suspect that what you refer to as mutated, was always 'Kwanso'. 'Kwanso' and 'Europa' may be closer than cousins, but definitely related. I doubt it will do much good for you to personally try to stop the natural spread of either daylily. They seem to brighten up the ditches, which is not a bad thing. They are also commonly used for landscaping tough areas. 'Kwanso' seems to tolerate more shade than the rest of the family.

When I say invasive, I mean in comparison to other plants. If planted close to something else, without barriers, you will soon only have the daylilies. They are very aggressive spreaders.

H. fulva 'Europa' was introduced to the US via Europe, hence the name. If someone in France would pay $5 a stem, I'm sure there would be lots of people willing to supply them. Put my name on the list please.

All the daylilies you have planted by the fence may be there in the next epoch, not just the next generation. The ditch lilies and 'Kwanso' varieties historically date back thousands of years. The amazing thing is that they reproduce vegetatively, not sexually. So the ones you planted by the fence are clones of plants that have been around a very long time.

You were absolutley correct about the H.Kwanso, but this year they appear more line H.'Flore Pleno' with many more petals that the Kwanzo.but you likely know all that already. Thank's for making me search for it myself as I saved the source in my favorites for future reference, if I remember to use it.

Please anyone out there, will gladly pay postage for "ditch" or tiger lillies you want rid of. My midwestern grandmother had big orange lillies growing all over her property and we loved them, they were great, bloomed all summer long. Some had speckles, some not. Having trouble finding them in Salt Lake Utah. Please contact Pat
