starting seeds inside in Dec?

I have a bunch of hardy dinner plate hib seeds. I really want them to bloom this coming summer. Is it too early to start the seeds indoors now? Has anyone ever tried starting in Dec? (I'm gonna do 1/2 now and 1/2 in the spring.)

I read on here some start theirs in Jan and they bloom in August, so I'm thinking if I start mine now they'll bloom in July? Am I wrong? Would it be harmful for them to be started now and kept under lights till they go outside (probably in April.)

If you keep the seed at 70-80 degrees they should germinate ok and the the real challenge begins of making sure they get enough light to keep them happy until you can plant them outside. It can be done but will take some extra care and diligence on your part.

You need to know your average date of last frost, first. Then you can follow guidance from Purdue, if it looks right to you: Time to Seed Before Last Frost 10 weeks cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower 10 weeks head lettuce 7 weeks tomato 7 weeks eggplant 7 weeks pepper 4 weeks cucumber 4 weeks melons 4 weeks squash I'm not in quite that much of a hurry to get any of the plants set out in my cool Spring part of the world. However, I'd give the peppers just about that much time for going out 2, or so, weeks after last frost. I've got the peppers, eggplant, onions, and snapdragons started - that's it. Yes I agree with sleepy the window is the coldest place. Never-the- less I did start seeds for many years in my south facing window. Seeds do not have to be in a window until they sprout. Before I had my greenhouse and heating mat, I started mine with a small cake rack over the forced air heating rad. I bought a few clear Croissant boxes from my grocer for 50 cents each. With their clear lids they are perfect for starting seeds. I held them together with a clothes pin because some of the buttons on them stick and are hard to undo. I use plastic mushroom boxes that I put holes in the bottom of to put the soil in and 2 of them fit in the croissant box, which fits nicely over the rad. I still use the clear boxes and mushroom boxes in the greenhouse and on my heating mat.

Start ing seeds inside or in an outside shed

I would start them inside. I have a room in my basement that I start seeds in and they germinate much sooner then the seed packet states.The room stays around 70.I started strawflower seeds Sunday and they were sprouting on Wednesday 5 days sooner then the packet says. I have a 4 shelf unit made from wood with 2-4 foot shop lights above the trays. The lights are on 14 -16 hrs a day from day one.

Here I am a grower of ornamentals and start lots of seeds, mostly perennials and biennials outdoors in the summer. I have a plastic covered area 10x20 feet open on both ends, mostly shaded by tall trees. The summer temperatures are just about right and the fluctuating day/night temperatures actually seem to help the germination. I started mine in 6 parts perlite, 3 parts sphagnum, and 3 parts organic potting soil. They all came up well, but now unfortunately I have lost them all, the last 2 today due to damping off. I don't know why, but the last few days, some of my sprouts just decided to poop out on me. They were doing so well, I really don't understand what happened. I'm very disapointed. Especially at the loss of all my hibs.

i have started a few different kinds of hard hibs in jan, my lunas are about 5 in tall now, when and how do i pinch?
