behind in winter preparation?

Is everyone as far behind in getting ready for winter as I am? Is it because it was such a mild September, and now October?

I just got the chicken coop ready for winter, but the garden is barely touched. Wood still has to be stacked, and the chimney checked. Greenhouse needs recovering, and fruit trees are still in containers. I feel like I could use another two months before the snow flies!

How bad are you?

I can relate to being so far behind. Have been in that same boat, myself. But not this year. We had such a lousy summer, there was not that much to do in the yard. Garden was done by the middle of September, and when I finished it, I got the pond done. Enclosed the deck, got the doors pulled apart and cleaned. In fact, this year, I am bored to tears this month, cause I do have most everything done.

Got the house reinsulated and the furnace and ducts cleaned in August, so that ugly chore is done. And, because I called before the peak season, I had it done on the day I asked. I am going to have to be this organized next year.

Tell you what,I'll give you a hand, at least in spirit. If you get a few more good days, will that help you get it done. I will put in a word for you with the Weatherman.

The only thing I've done is return the mulching riding lawn mower I bought last year for a refund. It did not work worth diddly squat!!! I will want to buy one by March or April 2003. I have Ba' Hia pasture grass as my "lawn" and it goes dormant from October to March. At least it does not grow tall, but it does have a nice color to it. I have had people from the area ask me what it is because they struggle so much with St. Augustine and the other kinds. It's great!!! I will cut off the water to the out-lying pipes if a freeze is forecast. That will not be for a while here. I don't bring plants inside or cover them up any more. Charlie, Seems there's ads on every site including GW. I detest sitting, awaiting an entire commercial on YT before watching a vid or listening to a song. Seems like all grammas can grow a plant/s without proper care, and they do wonderful. My grand-mother had an African Violet in a ceramic, non-drainage pot, sitting several feet from a curtained window. Yet, it bloomed like crazy..perfect foliage..she never fertilized, and watered whenever. My friends mother had several plants including TC/Cc in butter containers. lol..Again, no drainage or fertilizer. Her TC/CC bloomed every year. I don't get it. I used to work at a plant store where we bagged plants despite size. We'd packaged w/brown paper called Sleeves. Sleeves were cone-shaped. The bottom of the sleeves had a hole which was set over a metel stand, then the plant was lifted and placed through the top of the sleeve on the stand. The remaining sleeve was rolled up to the top, folded and stapled. Sleeves are still sold, but usually purchased in huge quantities. Or were. You probably have NO idea what I just said..lol Yep, I think most teens want to grow One certain plant. lol At least your son was interested in the Bamboo..That's a start, right??? What type of bamboo is/was it? Have you ever considred growing from seeds/cuttings? If you have room for a plant stand/light, different plants can be grown..Or small plants like AV's, Episcias, etc. LOL, kneeling ovation. Did you save your music? Hi. My winter humidity is in the teens to mid-20% range. In the cooler growing area, the temp is 58F all winter. In the orchid room, which has a door, humidity is slightly higher, and temps are low 60s-low 70s. Many experienced growers have said often, humidity isn't as critical as we've been led to believe - the notion's an echo from the original British hot houses which were hot and moist, no matter the needs of the orchids. This may still be controversial. Regardless, the orchids here, which need intermediate conditions except for the 58F thing, do just fine. As for winter light, you can check and see how many days each month have sunshine where you live. Here in Minnesota, I try not to think about how many are cloudy. Oh no! I’d be so disappointed to see half of my roses eaten! Ugh, I’m sorry. It’s hard to not feel frustrated with the wildlife. We have a handful of cucumbers we planted on the side of our chicken coop that have been a nice treat for a groundhog. My barn cats had 5 kittens this summer and they have been terrorizing my gardens! Not eating anything obviously, but they think all of my plants and flowers are toys to play with. I’ll have to track down some good pictures of our orchard and farm. Our apple trees are getting old so we’ll need to replace them in the next 5 years or so. Sam, the goat, is pretty entertaining when he’s not eating my plants. My kids like to make a game of “Where is Sam today”. He’s almost never where he’s supposed to be! I plant to put most of my roses in an area around my house where deer usually won’t go. We’ve also been putting our hair (after haircuts) in my garden beds...we read that this keeps them away? I don’t know if it works but we have strawberries on one side of our house that never get bothered by animals so I’ve assumed the hair has helped.

Yes, do a youtube or google search! There are several ways to do this and it would be so much easier for you to learn by watching a step by step tutorial than by trying to read our instructions lol. I've tried a couple of ways - in peat moss in plastic bags, in styrofoam coolers, and some other ways I've forgotten - I almost always lost them despite others swearing by these methods. The year with the plastic bags, I finally bought a few tubers over the winter, expecting to lose mine, and of course since I bought some, mine overwintered fairly well haha! I had gotten into the habit of treating dahlias as annuals, but last year I grew flowers for my daughter's wedding, and planted about 80 dahlia tubers. I felt compelled to try to save them lol. So I googled, youtubed, etc., and settled on layers of newspaper and peat moss, with the tubers in the peat moss, all layered in large cardboard boxes (about 2'x2'x2'). I still can't find eyes, so I cut the bunch of tubers into quarters down the neck, and dealt with that this past spring. I had quite good success with this method, but you may find some other way that works for you. I'm thinking of trying the saran wrap method this fall, but that means you have to really separate the tubers, so I'm not sure I'm up to that lol. So much easier to find the eyes in spring, IMO. I'm waiting for my Jerusalem artichokes to arrive. Nope, haven't gotten the wood stacked or the chimney cleaned. Have gotten most of my harvest in except cabbages and turnips. Have got most new bulbs in, ditto garlic and other onions and shallots, and a lot of fall muching done. Season extending hoops and plastic are up. My son built a bunch of new shelves in a closet for a new pantry, but haven't gotten everything resorted yet. Think this last will have to wait for bad weather and time off work!

I still have to do my getting ready for winter, window washing and take the screens down. Put the banking around the house, pull carrots and beets from the garden and pick all the brussell sprouts before the chickens get them(they have already stripped the carrots, beets, swisschard and large leaves off of the sprouts!) Also have potted plants that still need to be put in the ground before it freezes! Then I need to start mowing/shredding the fallen leaves that are starting to cover the lawn and spread some lime on it. Also rake the leaves out of the flowerbeds so they don't suffocate and rot my flowers....but it's getting cold out there! Winter is just around the corner! :-(

I'm so far behind I can't stand it! Storm windows are still in the shed; compost bin needs to be emptied and spread on veg patch; shrubs need to be wrapped so the deer don't munch them down to nothing. If it ever stops raining/sleeting/snowing (which it's done for the past 2 weeks) maybe I'll get some of these things taken care of. It's nice to know I'm not the only one feeling like winter crept up without much warning.
