Rasberries and Blooms

I enjoyed my walk in the garden this evening regardless of the heat. The rasberries are finally ripening and I picked a cup to go with my lunch tomorrow.

Here's a few of the blooms from Sunday and Monday...

Very pretty blooms, and ny favorite one is Court Magician . That is a beauty.I also like Baby blue Eyes, too.

Broadway Starfish and Miss Tinkerbell are particularly appealing. I thought I was going to get to see a photo of your raspberries.

One of the big misconceptions people in warmer climates have is that raspberries like full sun. This is only true in colder climates. In warmer climates, especially in dry regions like Southern California and Texas, raspberries DO NOT do well in full sun; they will wither and die, even if you give them water everyday. Raspberries still need some sun, they cannot grow in too much shade, but in hot dry climates they have a very narrow tolerance range between getting enough sun and too much sun. Getting morning sun is best, because it is usually cooler in the mornings and there is often dew, then plants can receive sunlight without as much evaporative water loss.

The new canes (primocanes) should be all green. But yeah it would be hard to tell because of flourocanes coming from the stumps. Probably green too! Again I have read it is best to just remove these, as the low growth and stump is prime-time for fungus. Forgo the summer crop. If you want a summer crop next year, only remove top third. I myself am expecting over 150 berries from 3 canes on the summer crop of ever bearing Fall Gold cultivars. So I am harvesting both crops. I disagree with the academics and others who say you should skip this crop. It is as big or bigger than the fall crop. I think it may depend where grown, as some I have talked to are unable to harvest a large summer crop. I seem to be having no problems at all. The plants grew numerous more laterals and are teeming with buds. I counted over 30 flower clusters on 3 canes. Sorry but it seems silly to waste 150 to 200 raspberries. The only negative is the primocanes are smothered by these old canes. But I guess on summer bearing one has to deal with this too!

Wonderful post, perhaps we can keep it going all summer. I love native plants and have many interspersed with my cultivated plants. This week, the blooms are serviceberry, elderberry, Jacob's ladder, tall Jacob's ladder, starflowers, chiming bells (Mertensia paniculata), a saxifrage (S. tricuspidata), nagoonberry, Sanguisorba officinalis (red burnet), and a dwarf willow and myrical gale that are a little past their most gorgeous stage. I tried to take a couple of pictures just now, but the sun is just too bright and is washing all the color out, or is just reflecting off the plants with shiny leaves (of course I'm too lazy to go find the good cameral and do it). Last summer and this last winter were very hard on my cultivated perennials, so this year the stars of my flower beds will be my native plants!

I had them very bad 2 years ago.year. I remember years ago we used to have huge hills of fireants and I believe the crazy ants killed those off. Got rid of the crazy ants with Termidor ....just one application and haven't seen them since. It is also used for termites. While I had the crazy ants, I felt like it was the end of the world. They are relentless and it was a huge relief to get rid of them.

You have a nice variety of blooms. I enjoyed the miniatures, the UFS, and the full forms. I think the clump shot of Blue Eyed Butterfly is my favorite.

Broadway Starfish is a beautiful bloom. You can share it again. Baby Blue eyes reminds me of Bluegrass Memories. The colors are amazing, aren't they. Heavenly Angel Ice posed nicely for you. But Blue Eyed Butterfly is my favorite too.

Great looking blooms. I love the small and mini flowers so naturally they are my favorite especially Baby Blue Eyes who not only being a small also has my favorite colors. I do go over to the larger side every now and then so Blue Eyed Butterfly is my favorite of the larger blooms
