Question(s) about the blooms on hibicus

Hello,

I posted before in a thread below asking for help IDing a tropical hibiscus I was lead to believe was hardy...anyway you growers were a big help and I was wondering if you would have an answer to a new question.

The plant this summer and spring had produced large leaves almost the size of a salad plate, but I am noticing now that the new blooms coming out are a lot smaller than they were before, almost the size of a tea cup saucer.

I'm just curious if this is normal, for the blooms to shrink so much in size. Since the weather is cooler now I am thinking it may have something to do with it. I'm just more curious than anything.

Walking around the neighborhood I have spotted a few people with a hibiscus tree with the most amazing flowers. They are blood red and HUGE, about the size of dinner plates. Some of the blooms I have seen are so large that they flop over. Any one know what kind it is? Home owners are never around to ask and the only gardening center we have it HD and I never saw them there.

can you tell me a lil about the folage on the red hibiscus you see? that would be a big help in id ing tthe plant. also my hibiscus usually peter out near the end of season. the flowers get smaller and smaller and fewer in number.

Yep about the smaller sized flowers in cooler weather. Mine just started getting smaller. Happens every Fall.

Thank you wardda and hybridsage. That answers my question perfectly. I am zone 6 and do not currently have any B&B salvias but wanted to purchase some in the Spring for in front of my house. I am assuming that even though it is a tender perennial, it will bloom the first year, unlike many of the hardy perennials? I hope to try and overwinter them next year, but realize it is iffy in my zone. Some winters are milder than others so I figure it is worth a try. Did you find your B&B salvias at local nurseries or did you order online? If one orders online, do you know a good source? Thanks again, Teresa

Congrats on the flowers! They do have beautiful flowers;). I’d personally leave it alone. You just repotted it last year, give it some time to fill out that pot. But if you want to remove some pups. Remove the outermost because the newest pups are so small and tightly packed together I think if you tried to remove them you would do more harm than good.

I have the same issue here in Dallas. I think Houston is expected to get down to 28, most rosebuds will survive that if it’s not too prolonged. If they are in movable pots, I’d move them under eaves or covered patio just to be safe, but most likely you’re OK anyway. Here is Dallas we are likely to get down to 24, which is more problematic. This spring (march) , we got down to 27 while all my buds were already well formed and they had no damage whatsoever, rose growth can easily withstand a light frost if doesn’t linger.
