Growing Herbs in a strawberry pot

Hi there

I have an empty strawberry pot that i plan to plant some herbs in. I have tried this before but the herbs did not grow very well, I have since learned that some herbs will grow fine together in pots, while others 'take over'. has anyone got any tips for which herbs are grown best together in a strawberry pot, which are better in a pot alone and which I can/ should plant in the ground. Also if anyone can advise me on the order of which to plant my herbs in the strawberry pot (eg which in bottom, middle, top) this would be much appreciated! Thanks xx

I posted a whole thread on this somewhere below!

You want to put MINT in your strawberry pot. Just put it in the top section. Mint is invasive so it will find its way to all the other openings and start coming out of them as well before you know it.

Plant thyme by itself in a small container. It likes to be cramped. I believe lavender is like this as well. Basil is well suited to both containers and the ground, just keep it very sunny and well watered.

You're in the UK, right? When we lived there our landlord had planted right into the ground, in our garden, sage and lemon balm and they did absolutely brilliantly, year after year.

Bejay, I agree on the lemon balm (Mint family) but Chicago will have problems keeping Rosemary alive over winter months. It tends to grow very slowly and will die out unless it is a hardy cultivar of Rosemary. I can invision the pyramid with Rosemary (potted for bringing indoors in winter) on the vary top, strawberry plants cascading down the mid tiers and possibly lemon balm or other mint plants on the bottom. A border around the bottom may not keep the lemon balm from spreading but it can be mowed off if its at grass level.

I grew lemongrass in a 24" pot & it got about 3' tall & overwintered for 2 years indoors until I tried to divide it & killed it (it got too big for the pot). I've grown basil routinely to 2' in 12" pots, but it doesn't get all that bushy & I'd rather put it in the garden. I have chamomile in a 12" pot which I left out all winter by accident--It has reseeded & I will have way too much chamomile for it this year so will have to transplant when it's a little bigger. Chives volunteered in a pot of garden sorrel, (a temporary situation that turned permanent also because I forgot it) so I left them there & they're about to bloom. The sorrel is struggling & needs to go back in the big dirt. I bring the rosemary in during the winter & it gets very woody, but blooms, too! I have had little luck with lavender overwintering in pots & only marginal success with sage. Last year, my kids and I grew peanuts in a 24" planter-- the plants looked horrible & sickly all summer long but produced a handful of peanuts each... Basically, I think if you baby them right, you can grow just about anything in a pot. My neighbors go fantastic, wildly overburdened tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets, but I can't do it worth sh*t, so in the ground they go... Wild Mullein only grew to 3-4' in planters one year (it can get 7'+ in the wild)-- which made picking the flowers very easy & gave the deck a kind of exotic look; the reseeds went into the garden, where they promptly died. I have several of these (purchased before I actually gardened lol) and only recently am having luck with it. I'm not growing herbs but I think the same method might work for you - I left one opening empty on each pot, and when it's time to water (often in my case since I'm growing actual strawberries) I fill up an old wine bottle and turn it upside down into that empty soil space. This way you're not watering from the top - which inevitably eroded the soil out the holes and onto the floor in my experience. ;) The water is drawn into the soil slowly and at their roots which also decreases evaporation lost. They sell thingies at garden stores to do this but wine bottles are free around here. ;) I'm also growing mint in a strawberry pot - as an experiment to see if the roots will find their way out the openings (seems like they should? anyone try this?) And I water it the same way. Some times a little water on top if it's gotten too dry....

It will depend on what specific herb(s) you are growing. Rosemary or sage or even thyme will be fine with seven more weeks of growth, although those are better grown from cuttings rather than seeds. Basil will outgrow those tiny pots quickly, but harvesting them aggressively will help keep them going and could tide them over for the extra weeks. Parsley or cilantro/coriander won't do very well in those small pots at all. If you are using decorative pots, you could transplant things to 4 inch square or round "nursery cups/pots" and sell them or give them away, and start again in late April or early May. Knowing where you are located (your climate zone) and which specific herbs would help get a better answer.

Here's the result of my search for 'strawberry pot'.

I find them absolutely useless. Most people forget just how BIG herbs can get! And the competition in a strawberry pot is just fierce.

Except for parsley and thyme, herbs are too large for strawberry pots. There just isn't enough soil in the pot for the roots of the plants.

Use the strawberry pot for small annuals and get big, square or round pots (18" to 24") for the herbs. Most herbs will do better in the ground although container keep spready invasive ones like mint under control.

Love the idea of growing in a strawberry pot, but tried this before and never had good results. The soil dries out very quickly. Perhaps if the pot were filled with several varieties of thyme, or some of the Mediterannean herbs it would do better. Mine just seem to grow better in the garden. :)
