Can I keep these herbs on my bathroom windowsill?

Hi,

I recently got young plants of Rosemary, Thyme, Sage, Oregano and Mint. If possible I'd like to keep them in pots on my bathroom windowsill because I am running out of space, plus I'm a wheelchair user and there are only certain windowsills/areas outside I can get to. Are any of these suitable for keeping in small pots on a bathroom windowsill? I guess Rosemary should go outside as it it gets very big, and I know mint spreads like wildfire, but I don't know whether that means I should not keep it in a small pot - would that kill it? The bathroom gets quite humid when I shower, but it can easily be left airy if I open the door and/or window throughout the day.

Also are there any books people recommend for reading about all sorts of herbs and how to grow them?

You can always try but these plants prefer and will do much better outdoors even if kept in containers. If you search back through the posts here you will find many questions about indoor keeping of herbs and most responses are the same to the letter - these herbs are really plants that thrive outdoors and are a challenge at best indoors. I'd suggest finding a place where you can keep them outdoors in containers. There is information on the web about "wheelchair gardening" that may have some suggestions to help you do container gardening outside.

As far as books, there are many on growing herbs. I suggest visiting your local library (which is free!) or your local bookstore to find a book where the format and type of information appeals to you. They are all the same in basic growing info so it's all up to what you like.

I'd say that the primary reason for the failure of most culinary herbs to thrive inside is lack of sufficient light. Think about it: they prefer direct, full sun.

I love the mirror, it's beautiful, but I don't care for it there. What bothers me is the frame around it and the way it extends out. It doesn't seem to fit properly because the frame does not go past the end of the sink. Personally, in a small bath I prefer the look of twin mirrors. I think in your space because the vanity is small and the bowl comes so close to the wall on the left, oval mirrors would look better. They would cover the space you need them to without swallowing up the vanity area.

You're right, everyone IS watching you. Just to be sure, this forum has a volunteer committee that takes note of where you live and sends a team to stand in your yard and look in all your windows. :) In reality, most likely none of your neighbors cares one whit what you do in your house. Normal people are busy with their own lives. Besides, during the daytime, if you keep your lights off inside and stay away from the window, it's almost impossible to see you from outside anyway. Stand halfway across the yard and try to look in a window, and you'll see what I mean. It's another story at night, of course. But there's no sunshine at night, so you don't need to open your window then.

That tiny fixture is not going to give you enough light. Is it a full bathroom or just a WC and sink? The problem with a single fixture is that it will become a glare bomb if it provides enough light. What about a semi-flush mount with a drum shade? Paint the ceiling white and then it will bounce some light off the ceiling. This one has an adjustable stem, I believe, so you could play with the height. Or you could try something light this, but I fear you'd get a lot of pattern/ shadow. This one is Ikea. I also have an illuminated mirror from SimpleHuman that just needs to be recharged once in a while. It's extremely helpful for getting light right where you need it. And yes, that paint color is absolutely sucking away any light that you do have, so changing that will help. Good luck! It's a pretty space. I think I have the same faucet!!

Love that the mirror is right in front of the window, it maximizes the natural light, my suggestion would be to move the toilet seat under the window, and use the space behind the door for storage, either a closed cabinet or a rack. You can also go for a floating vanity, it will give the illusion of more space, in white. For the walls, I suggest you go for white, because it also maximizes the light, and you can use the wall that is in front of the door as an accent wall, you can use a very light shade of the color behind the bed, for harmony. you can also put a bench next to vanity and you can use a plant. As for the tiles, I am not sure If it's doable, but you can just put another layer of tiles on top of the one you currently have. Paint would work too I guess, but it does not last. If you are going to use the herbs for cooking, it is possible that they can become contaminated with e. coli in the bathroom (aerial spray from flushing or by hands) A kitchen windowsill would be better
