Rose of Sharon clippings...When to plant?

Hi,

I have some clippings that I cut from my Grandparents ROS tree. I cut these in the spring and put most into pots, a few I put in water. They are now all in pots and 3 of the 5 pots have leaves (one even has a few buds) and there are multiple clippings in these 3 pots (2-3). My questions is when should I plant these in the ground? Should I plant them this fall or wait until spring? I have read some great advice in this forum but did not come across when the best time to plant is... Any advice would be greatly appreciated! These clippings are very sentimental to me :)

Hi loriv,
I can relate to them being sentimental to you. The picture I included shows ROS that started as 1 foot seedlings that I dug from my mother's yard when she passed away 16 years ago. I would go ahead and plant them now. It will give them some time to get settled before winter. Since you said there are 2-3 cuttings per pot, I wouldn't bother trying to separate them. I planted each of mine with 2 or 3 together. I would also pinch off the buds on the one so that it will devote it's effort into root production instead of flowers. Also, since Massachusetts gets a bit colder than here in Oklahoma, you will probably want to mulch them come winter. Be sure to keep them well watered until they go dormant for winter.

I can't think of a reason not to as they do well from your neck of the woods all the way to the Gulf Coast of Texas. We have dry hot summers and they live fine without watering in the summer weather here. Paul

I wish I saw this a couple of months ago, I threw out 2 miniature roses. I would have given them to you. If I'm getting rid of any more I'll post it here for local pick up. I have no more minis but occassionally get on a kick and re-do gardens and out goes the roses that I'm not Crazy about.

I have a white one in my yard that I just love. There is a stunning purple one at the garden center I work for. I took two pieces and stuck one in a pot with soil and the other in a water bottle. The heat got the one in the pot, June was not the right time to try that, but the water bottle one is going gang busters. I will transplant it to a pot when it cools down again.
