Bamboo Farm Owner seeks advice - highest and best use for land
Comments (4)You don't have enough bamboo to supply a furniture or industrial fiber factory (i.e. thousands and thousands of acres), and like me you have too much to consider it a garden feature. I only have about 2 acres of bamboo-which is plenty as far as I'm concerned. It can be a labor intensive plant. I can say, however, that it saves me from purchasing mulch. Thinning and grooming the grove produces a huge amount cane that I chip using a garden-variety chipper. When I get into the swing of things I can produce a 30-40 pound bag of mulch in about 7 minutes. It ends up saving about $700 a year (the cost of about two truckloads of garden mulch). It isn't as pretty as cedar, but it's free...and I get the exercise. I've found I never stop grinding out mulch just because I've run out of bamboo culls, but simply because I can't spend my life grinding up bamboo....See MoreBuying Some Farm Land Near Naples - What Should I Be Aware Of?
Comments (35)pnbrown, Texas Dolomite is from ancient seabed limestone which I believe they said it has the traces of the ancient ocean greenery deposited in it as it was formed. Another good source of minerals is Greensand because it supplies marine potash, silica, iron oxide, magnesia, lime, phosphoric acid and 22 trace minerals. It's a boon for tomato lovers, because it has the 'vitamins and minerals' that tomato plants need to produce abundant, intensely flavored fruit With my having been a prospector, I'm fortunate to still have(in many buckets in my barn)the pebbly sand left over after processing for gold and silver which I also use in my potting soil mixtures. This pebbly sand comes from stream bottoms and diggings that I've prospected all over this country adding many minerals not found in Florida soils. Aw heck... now the secret of my potting soil is disclosed. Lou...See Morewhere is the the best place to start a FARM ?
Comments (40)I have really enjoyed this tread, have never laughed so much. Reminds me of that old acres of diamonds story where a landowner sells his farm to finance his global search for diamonds and ends up broke and homeless while the person who bought his farm discovers that it is awash with millions of dollars of crude oil or something of that effect. The moral of the story may be that many of us are sitting on acres of diamonds so to speak but are so motivated for a geographical change or the pursuit of some elusive but unattainable dream that we do not recognize the treasures that are beneath our very feet or underneath our very nose. reminds me also of the french movie Jean De Florrante, (ca'nt remember exactly how to spell it,) where a man inherits a farm in the countryside of France and kills himself trying to make a living off of it while being sabotaged by his father who is trying to steal the farm away from his son in order to give it to his mentally retarded nephew, because neither father nor son know who each other are until after the death of the son at which time the father discovers that he has killed his true son and has thus ruined his acres of diamonds so to speak. The poster sounds like that they could be a front man for a group of Amish people who quietly buy up thousands of acres of prime farmland that is poised to increase even further in value in the near future, but I doubt it, sounds more like someone from Japan or somewhere representing a bunch of businessmen or something, who knows, but very funny tread. thanks, Barry...See MoreBest Place(s) to Buy Metal Labels/Markers for Hostas? Cheap?!?
Comments (17)Thank you guys for all of the quick responces! Just as a sidenote incase anyone is interested: I also enclose in each hosta a second cheap plastic label I stick way in the dirt just incase the metal one gets displaced, so I always have the hosta name in a second place. I notice though that even black Sharpie markers do not last forever. And if the sun hits any part of it, forget it. However, if you get their Metallic Silver markers that are meant to write on dark surfaces, these really stay forever. I have had labels out in the sun for years with no fade so far. And, I also just discoved yesterday at Staples for the first time, that Sharpie now has Oil-Based Paint Markers! They are specifally made to be Weather-Water-Fade-Resistant. The pack I got was one Gold and one Silver. But on the back of the package, it says that they also come in other colors, so I am sure you could find black too at some point. They also have them in different points, med, fine, etc. I just thought I would share that while we are on the subject! Christy...See Morehamchuk
