What a shame! Has your company been approached to contribute unwanted-but-useful materials to a non-profit organization? There must be a way... as in some cities restaurants, bakeries, and caterers let an organized group pick up extra food.

I ahted that when I worked for a bakery. Later, I volenteered for harvest Home of Tampa, where they fetch the donations of unwanted food and take it to shelters. The business gets a tax break and the homeless got muffins. It was very good, all around.

Maybe contact Habitat for Humanity?

Hey, how do you think I got a new paver area around my potting bench? Or the beautiful cedar bench, table and plant stand on my patio? We even have some perfectly ok equipment, blower, edger, long handled tree trimmer, because they didn't want to take the time to fix it, so they bought new. Dennis is constantly being asked to haul all that falls in category 3-"Excess material that is not cost effective to return". Fortunately, I have a talented guy that can fix or build almost anything. But it sad when you think of the waste that goes on. I am just happy we can put some of the stuff to good use.

We donate a lot of stuff to Habitat. Last year we even built a home in Pine Hills with Habitat. But even habitat does not find it cost effective to come pick up excess and unsorted cinderblocks or the remains of a paver driveway. Just a sad situation that is made worse by an otherwise sound "No Salvage" policy.

I have two ideas if your boss would allow it.
First, the simplest: Put a FREE sign on the stuff. You'd have to put it on the other side of the street or next to the trash can on the street so people didn't take anything you wanted to keep. People are quick to make a mistake if they want something.
Second: post on Freecycle. Believe me it will get taken. You just have to put an address and people will get it within the hour (use signage as above).
I'm the same way as you. My DH likes to throw stuff away and I want to give it to charity (if it has any value at all).

Looks like stuff you would buy at a "high-end" store like Pier1. He is "very" talented.

Habitat For Humanity would benefit most from your extras. Or, if there is a Church doing a add-on or remodel. Same goes for a shelter. etc. Lots of ways it could be put to use.

There is a thrift shop in N Fort Myers for donated construction materials -- ICAN. I don't know if they pick things up, but they sell all sorts of leftover building supplies, proceeds to benefit aids patients. Hope Hospice also has a thrift store here, and Habitat For Humanity. You might look into the various charity thrift shops in your area.

Another place you may try recycling the block and pavers is through a crusher, either your company's own or one at your city or county building department. Where I live, in Volusia County, crushed concrete products are in common use as roadway or parking areas subbase and base courses (the layers under the asphalt pavement, for those of you not in construction), or to beef up building pad fill soils that just need a little more "oomph" per square foot. Crush-crete can also be used in place of more expensive limerock or gravel as a stand-alone temporary paving surface, and sometimes even as drainage media for septic and storm drain systems: the point is, a few odd-sized leftover pavers or blocks may be difficult for your construction company to use, but a stockpile of crush-crete can always come in handy.

It's great that they care about their employees, vendors and clients, but what about OUR environment! I think they need to rethink their policy. I hate waste and I hate the fact that they are filling up our landfills with items that could be reused.

I am sure they want peple to stay off the site and out of the dumpster because of liability.We have a Habitat for Humanity store here and contractors can donate leftover tile,old hurricane shutters,light fixtures,sinks, appliances they also get rugs,furniture lamps etc.

wow i can't believe w/ the concrete shortages they are tossing pavers. i also can't believe they haven't tried selling off the concrete block and pavers to haulers who in turn sell it to crushers and turn it into fines. lots of small haulers would pick that waste up for free. generally builders use just a couple generic paver colors in all of their developments in one pattern, just accumulating the leftovers from a few jobs could probably pave an entire driveway w/o buying that product. sooo how much paver waste are you talking about LOL? i sell pavers in landscape jobs and i'm surprised they would waste much w/ as long as it can take to get pavers sometimes... ~ liz

Would it be worthwhile to present the many responses, suitably edited of course, to your management as a cost reduction measure. Even if it's only a charitable deduction it still increases the bottom line. Management always likes cost reduction suggestions.
