Wednesday Clumps and Multiples

I usually don't post clump photos because I'm not good at taking them, but these daylilies were showing off today:

PAPER DRAGON (Munson) has been blooming its head off. Many of my Munsons have had their best blooming year ever.

CHATEAU DE FLEUR: There were at least ten flowers in bloom this morning, but I couldn't get a good shot of the whole clump. This has been the best performer in the garden this year.

MOKAN BUTTERFLY has been blooming for weeks:

HALF MOON KEY is in full bloom right now. The first few blooms were splotchy, but she's beautiful now:

JUST KISS ME trio:

LANCELOT OF FRANCE, always prolific:

One of the first daylilies I planted, BEST KEPT SECRET. It still has a prime location in the front of the garden and it earns its place every year:

I like clump shots and multiples, you have a lot of good ones here, but I think I like Claudine's Charm the most today. Avedon

Half Moon Key is my favorite of these, closely followed by Claudine's Charm.

maryl, I have plenty of space, but I have more than I want to take care of now. So, I'm looking at every DL with a more critical eye. And yes, LMM is a blooming machine! Debra, Most DL's take a couple of years to settle in after I plant them. The blooms are skimpy and the scapes are short at first. But LMM took off running. You did gooooood - thank you! Arif, Most of us have to wait 4 or 5 years for a daylily to become a mature clump. But at the rate you are going, you may only have to wait 4 or 5 more weeks. ;-) Tell us your secrets! Nate, Good question. I don't know the answer. I've seen the Stamile butterfly collection - stunning. Julia, I'm going to post another photo of BLUE-EYED BUTTERFLY because I feel guilty for the bad marks I gave it for perfomance. This is why I let it stay - I have three more clump pics from today. This one doesn't have a fancy bloom, but it is the perfect size to me (about 30 x 6), foliage is always nice, and it is very vigorous. It's a Curt Hanson daylily that I don't see often. FOLLOW YOUR HEART - DUBLIN ELAINE was showing off today - This one never doubles for me until it reblooms. Fortunately, it makes a pretty single bloom. DARK WONDER - Kathy

Hi Jan, Great pics, as usual! My favorite in this group is CABBAGE FLOWER - I think I say that every time you post a pic of it. I have a few to add to this thread. I am behind on my pics, but we're getting some rain this morning so maybe I can catch up. CROOKED HOUSE - new this year - tall one HOW SWEET IT IS - has done very well this year except on the cold mornings LADY NEVA - had to stake this one because of all the wind LAUGHING OUT LOUD - looking tall and stately - big flowers tear easily on windy days Kathy

Julia - Coral Majority seems darker in color this year. I'm not sure if it was because of the cool nights and hot days or what caused it. Willow Dean Smith's color is both calming and cooling in this sweltering weather. Chris and Jean - WDS is quite the beauty. I'm really glad I added it! Dean - The eyes on both TBE and WLL are excellent. WLL has never reached the registered scape height or had the bud count the hybridizer got, but I think it's a bright, cheerful addition to the garden. By the way, WLL was misregistered as a tet. It's really a dip. I spent years crossing it to tets to no avail. Then I noticed the hybridizer had registered a 2010 cultivar, W. Flowering Spooks, a dip with WLL as the parent. Debra

Thank you all for looking. Debra, Thank you very much for the kind comments on the garden. When I fix the bed, I dig out all grass and weeds, then spread Preen pre-emergent on the bed. then I mulch and each year, I put out mulch. I pull little weeds when they sprout, but it usually only happens after a rain, and there aren't many, so you are really complimenting preparation, there isn't a lot of maintenance required. Rita, My impression is that African Plum is a Munson, but I'm not sure. It is a real bloomer, but I didn't get re-bloom last year. Michelle, the pink one is Icy...don't know why I didn't see the label this morning. That is the prettiest it has ever been. Julia, I got Clown Parade last year, and it bloomed and bloomed for weeks. It is a fabulous bloomer, but I didn't get rebloom on it last year. I couldn't fuss, because I had as many as 12 blooms on it at once and it bloomed a long time. I got it from Bob Selman at Blueridge Gardens.

Just Kiss Me and Claudine's Charm catch my eye. Lancelot of France is cute, but I wonder how it holds up in the sun; I've seen a few faded shots on the web, not unattractive, but definitely not bright any more. Wonderfully framed photos! How can you say you aren't good at clump shots? Best Kept Secret for me had (has, since I have it elsewhere) not the greatest bud count.

OH my! They are all so pretty. I love Just Kiss Me, Best Kep Secret and Lancelot of France. What do you put in your soil when you plant? I'm still trying to learn. Sarah

CHATEAU DE FLEUR is beautiful. I love the look.
LANCELOT OF FRANCE is one I could easily add. Good to know it is a prolific bloomer.
I have BEST KEPT SECRET that I got from our club plant sale last year. I think it needs another year here to really show its stuff. It is a huge bloom and the color is great.

Claudine's Charm was such a favorite of mine that I moved it to a better location last year, and boy did she appreciate it.

Mantis, your comment about Lancelot of France made me go outside to check it, and you are absolutely right: The blooms are completely shriveled up compared to the rest of the daylilies that bloomed today. And "cute" is the right word for the bloom, since it's definitely on the small side. Thanks for the encouragement about the photography.

Sarah, I don't do a darn thing to the soil here. If a plant doesn't succeed here, then I get rid of it. I don't water anything once it's established and I don't fertilize. Some areas of the garden definitely have better soil than others, so if I love a flower that's growing in poor conditions, I might move it to a better location. The worst soil (rocky and sandy where a driveway used to be) now get irises instead of daylilies. Many of my daylilies get quite a bit of shade, and they tend to perform the best. I guess I'm kind of a lazy gardener. :o)

Julia, I remember Chateau de Fleur was difficult for me to find back in the days when I was hunting for Munsons, but it was definitely worth the search. Hope BKS settles in for you.

I think those are great clump shots, I like every one of them, but Claudine's Charm is the best. Lancelot of France is beautiful, a wonderful shot of it. I like CHATEAU DE FLEUR too.

Anytime someone is nice enough to share clump shots it makes me very happy! But Chris, there is no way on earth to choose just one of them...they are too pretty and too many to choose just one. Beautiful.

Those are all just fantastic. I would say your very good at taking clump shots. I didn't even have to think more than a second about which was my favorite. I knew as soon as I came to the picture. LANCELOT OF FRANCE is my favorite and what a beauty it is. I love the color, love the bi-tone of it and love the midribs. Is that an oldie? I have never seen it before.

I dont see a thing wrong with any of these pictures.You take very good pictures, and my favorites is PAPER DRAGON and CLAUDINE'S CHARM.Lots of beauties, here.

Rita, Lancelot of France is a 10-year-old intro. The blooms are small (4"), but they always appear in bunches, and the color is vibrant. I love the midribs, too. Evidently it does fade quite a bit during the day, as Mantis pointed out. I never noticed that before.

They are all beautiful, but the picture of JUST KISS ME made me smile so I must like it the best. Sometimes I find that I try to intellectualize why I like something, but it's usually the emotional reaction that is valid.

Chateau de Fleur and Half Moon Key are my very favorites! Love all the clumps and multiples pics! Too bad about Lancelot of France fading quickly, it looks so nice and bright in the picture.
