Anyone else eat Hibiscus blooms?

I have several different colors in my yard.

When they're blooming like crazy, I'll go out and pick a bunch, rinse well, remove everything except the petals and lightly saute them.

Not only are they yummy, tasting a lot like summer squash, but very aesthetically appealing.

(I swear!...I'm not crazy!) LOL

I make hibiscus tea.
I'll have to try sauteing them. Sounds yummy.

I tear off the petals and eat the green nubbin below. Tastes like okra. LOL They are related, you know.

Do deer eat hibiscus plants? In: Flower Gardening Answer Yes deer eat everything. You might try rosemary, lantanna some sages. Deer typically do not like some of the stronger smelling plants. Herbs and traditional natural plants tend to make them move on to other people's tender plants. I hope this helps. Thanks, Marsha...I knew I could count on ya'll!! I'm constantly "scouting" in order to choose my most likely target. So beware anyone in Upstate SC...the next stranger knocking at your door could be me! What and where is pdn? Adele...Wow, what a brave lady you are. I'm very impressed that you'd brave the dark for those of us who couldn't bear the suspense of not knowing! I really like what you said about the leaves being a soft as your Grandmother's hands. Do you suppose the leaves on the double are just as soft? If not, I suppose I'll have to find one of each.

Hello, putting a heavy sprinkle of blood meal on the surface of the dirt around any plants will keep squirrels from uprooting what goodies they think you buried there. Might just keep them at a distance from the leaves of your plant. Make sure you buy the pure stuff- greyish - make sure they didn't add anything else in the small print. Blood meal is nitrogen, so consider the lowest nitrogen based fertilizer if you choose to use this around hibiscus. I heard something on orange peels, and although I know this will keep cats out, can't recall if that works for squirrels to. Good Luck - Sandy

Hibiscus buds falling before the bloom

Hello, when you open the flower buds, do you see brown stains or anything that looks like it has been chewed on? If so, it's the Hibiscus Gall Midge. The "bug in the bud" is very small, sometimes it takes a couple flower buds to actually find it. I had this gall midge prevent several of my hibiscus plants to fully bloom. I had the exact same symptom, the buds would start to grow, then drop before maturing. If it is the gall midge, you must treat the plant and the soil around it. Hibiscus tea is popular both here in the Middle East (especially Egypt) and in Mexico and the carribean. In Mexican restaurants it will be sold as 'Jamaica'. The brew the tea and add sugar, then add ice and drink it cold. I always thought they used the blossoms, but I read the other day that they use the seed pods. See Hibiscus sabdariffa

yes, hibiscus are edible and yummy....tastes similar to daylily petals, which are also edible and yummy...like the best, sweetest lettuce. Summer come on!

Is all species of Hibiscus blooms, edible?

The only hibiscus I know that is edible is this:

Do you any of you know what species or variety of hibiscus you are eating? I'll be trying to grow this in my front yard, soon, and I love the color of the hibiscus.

I've made tea out of the petals of tropical hibiscus (rosa-sinensis) and it was nummy.

I loooove hibiscus tea...I first discovered jamaica juice when I was in Mexico. I'm thinking about getting a hibiscus mostly so I can have fresh tea (and the gorgeous flowers, of course!). Are any varieties inedible? Do some have more/better flavor than others?

Just today, I received some seeds I'd ordered - one was ROSELLE (hibiscus sabdariffa) - the bud used in tea. The planting instructions say it needs a long hot growing season. I wonder if north Florida summers will be suffecient? I also received Jicama and Tea Tree seeds. Will try to get them all started tomorrow so as soon as the weather settles, I should have baby plants ready for the garden. cora
