growing in coffee containers
Comments (3)I have a boat load of coffee cans.. tin and plastic. I grew Basil in the plastic ones this past year. One in the large size an one in the small one. They grew well, though as you can imagine, the one in the bigger container grew larger, it has died. As it was to big to fit on my indoor window plant shelf. but the smaller one is still hangin in there, waiting fer spring so it can go back outside! I plan on growing more herbs in the coffee containers this yr. I am hoping they are the right size for me an some won't grow to big to handle. The lids can be used for a saucer....See Morecoffee grounds in herb pots?
Comments (7)I appreciate the insight. Being that I am using decent potting mix I don`t think my issue is iron related. I would estimate that 10% (maybe less) of my potting mix was coffee grounds for this plant. It is possible that it acidified the mix I suppose. I am sure I wasn`t over watering, being that I water my basils and mint at the same time, and only one of the three had a problem , especially since mint prefers more moisture then basil. The pictures I found of nitrogen deficiency matches my mint perfectly. I started using miracle grow 10-10-10 a week ago and the leaves are getting much more glossy and dark and the sent is coming back a bit. Tomorrow I intend to repot the mint in a slightly larger pot with some new good dirt and see how it does. The article that clued me in... ``Nitrogen (N) deficiency in plants can occur when woody material such as sawdust is added to the soil. Soil organisms will utilise any nitrogen in order to break this down, thus making it temporarily unavailable to growing plants. ÂNitrogen robbery is more likely on light soils and those low in organic matter content, although all soils are susceptible. Cold weather, especially early in the season, can also cause a temporary shortage. All vegetables apart from nitrogen fixing legumes are prone to this disorder. Symptoms include poor plant growth, leaves are pale green or yellow in the case of brassicas. Lower leaves show symptoms first. Leaves in this state are said to be etiolated with reduced chlorophyll. Flowering and fruiting may be delayed.``...See MoreHerbs at Publix
Comments (6)I PURCHASED 6 of those fresh herbs only one survived they were not healthy in fact when I got them home and really looked the cilantro was rotted in the pot I returned it and went to get another one and it too was rotten. I carefully transplanted them immediately into a larger pot I looked at the root system and I had very little hope. I finially set the pot of junk herbs outside yesterday I noticed the mint struggling it might survive. I would not ever buy any of those herbs again. coffee mom You lucked out....See MoreHow Does this Brunch Menu Look?
Comments (21)I think your final menu sounds great! That zucchini cake will stand in for a sweet dessert just fine. Most of the items can be made ahead too - except for the biscuits, and they can be partially assembled with the wet ingredients added to the dry ingredients at the last minute. Potatoes are not needed - you've already got several garden ingredients spotlighted: spinach, zucchini, strawberries, lemons, fresh mint, etc....See More- 17 years ago
