Cat is right that the typically smaller growing, more colorful hybrids do not come true from seed, and are propagated mostly from divisions. I wouldn't recommend Phormium as an indoor grown plant, as they are very prone to mealybug even outdoors under less than ideal conditions, and need very bright light to grow well. People who grow these in the PNW sometimes may take them inside as container plants during the coldest spells, but they don't respond well to being keept in the dark and semidormant such as for Brugmansia.

Rfonte, I have never grown them from seed, but I did hear on this Forum that they grow very slowly til they are about 3 feet tall, give or take, and they they grow a little faster. They are so reasonably priced at any nursery or big box store, most people buy them at a decent size and grow them from there. If you do find seed, give it a try, and please report back as to how the seedlings did. They aren't fast growing shrubs/trees so you must have patience.

my blue porterweed verges on the pesky. i can tell you that porterweed can take months to germinate -- maybe even as long as a year, since i have had porterweed seedlings pop up thickly in areas where i haven't grown it in a year or more... so, give it a shot, but be patient. it needs a bit of cover to germinate best -- mine actually comes up most frequently in cracks and gravel.

Yes, that's true and I never would have even tried the seedling if I'd had more luck with cuttngs previous to finding the self seeded one (or since for that matter). I don't have any other hibiscus - I just have two 'Blue Satin' and there are no other hibiscus in my nieghbourhood. For better or worse the mom and the pop are the same variety.
