Comments (13)Hi Chris, You've done a fantastic job on your yard! All the plants look great and what an awesome harvest! yum!!! I saw the ice cream banana tree but didn't see the pup. Surprising though that it would have one at that size. I'll be posting pics of my yard sometime soon and let you know where it is. I grow mostly for hummingbirds (salvias, cuphea, lobelias,...) but getting into edible fruits. I have about 54 papaya seedlings growing from fruits purchased at the grocery store, a pithaya plant and a couple of dwarf lemon seedlings. I want to add bananas, peaches and plums for now. Maybe an apple. Again, great job on your yard and keep us posted on how things are growing. :) Sandra...See Moreneed info
Comments (48)Aloha, Even if coquis did get to Kauai, there are so many chickens over there the frogs would be eaten immediately! If we could get rid of the mongoose, then perhaps we could get enough chickens that they would eat all the coquis? Folks have mobilized to get rid of the coqui and the spread of it seems to be slowing down some. They got some new bigger County sprayers which can really cover a lot more area. A lot of the trouble is the easy time to get rid of them is when there is just one or two frogs in an area. Folks hear one and think it's not too bad. By the time they multiply to where folks can't sleep at night anymore, then it is a huge chore to get rid of them all. What ever happened to Amberskyfire, anyway? Did they ever get moved? They just seemed to have dropped off the edge. A hui hou, Cathy...See MoreMy Floida Prince Peach
Comments (19)They didn't get a heck of a lot bigger than that last picture - a little smaller than a major league baseball. Same color as the picture except a little deeper red and yellow instead of the green. But they sure were sweet ! Took the birds several weeks to figure out what they were. I bought them from the same K-mart or Wal mart And they are from Pang nursey on the Big Island. Come in a long black ( 1 or 3 gallon I think) bag and cost 20 somethin bucks. Just got the Misty blueberry but it doesn't look so good since I planted it. Lost a bunch of leaves. Also just got the apricot, but bugs ate off all their leaves - but now with wetter trade weather - they are growing back (this has also been happening to my mountain apples ! )Don't know if its grasshoppers - or them nightime beetles or maybe slugs. Any guesses ? Oh - only took about a year for the peach to easy double in size and get the peaches ! All the leaves turned brown and started falling off, then all of a sudden came back to life and flowered and made peaches. Aloha...See MoreBlueberries
Comments (27)Even though they say these are low chill, they do need a cold spell to be productive. Its not just the low chill for a few days, you need to get them down low and stay low fr a while. Something we lowland growers are not capable of doing. If you live at elevations of 2-3,000 feet then it's a sure thing for low night time temperatures. Even a "low chill" variety is misleading as many blue berries love the cold spell to flower and fruit well. You may have fluke cold spells every few years and this will not happen every year. I still say, grow what you grow best. Why grow a plant that is not suited to your conditions. It will always be cheaper to BUY strawberries in the clamshell than it would ever be to grow your own. The cost of everything you do buy to get a hand full is just simply more expensive than doubling the cost of store bought blueberries at its highest price....See Moregtanaka
