Planting herbs in non toxic planters

I was at the pot shop today, and saw beautiful glazes. When I asked if they were certified lead free, the answer was 'no, It says lead free, but that does not mean anything in Mexico. but the lead bakes off at firing.' I do not believe this since lead is an element, and where would that element go? Caked onto the oven? But then looking at the internet, I see other pots such as zinc.

My question is, how cautious is everyone about not planting herbs in toxic containers, and what does everyone use?
