Dormancy Question

I live in south Louisiana, very hot, very humid. Can I plant dormant daylilies here, or is it best to stick with evergreen and semi-evergreen?

Sharon, Why don't you buy one or two inexpensive dormants as an experiment? I grow quite a few dormants here in northwest FL...some do better than others. I've never had a dormant die...but I've had some that are slow to increase and are poor performers. SILOAM DOUBLE CLASSIC is a dormant that does extremely well here and it is also rust resistant.

I do have a few dormants, mostly the older ones, that do okay here in zone 9a, but I find the newer dormants don't do very well here. Before I spent big bucks on a dormant, I would make sure someone grows it in my area and that it does well. Also be careful planting one too close to evergreens as they will tend to crowd the dormants out.

@Drew: You may be wise in allowing overgrowth and then pruning back after any winterkill. In October or November I prune off up to half of all lateral growth as there is typically zero winter loss in zone 8b. @lsoh: The thickness (front to back) of the leafed and fruiting row for Logan, black diamond, and black-caps is a foot or less. Black diamond has very short fruiting spurs; the others can be a foot. I do not tip the trailers as I don't have that many trailing canes. They can be looped and threaded anywhere on the trellis. Note that my trellis requires no guying as all steel posts are connected on top with cedar in both directions, down-row and between rows. Saves space and maintaining wire tension is easy. Row spacing is 4 feet. Repeatedly bumping head on 5-foot-from-ground cedars is optional--but the pipe insulator foam does come in handy. The ground fencing: Prevents squirrel cratering

Mary, WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME!! As far as unpotting them....sure you can! Once they are dormant and the leaves have dried and fallen off (or been pulled or cut), that's a great time to clean them up a little. Shake the dirt from the roots, trim back the neck, and look for pests! I even know that some trim back the roots by about 1/2 - you figure some of those roots are going to dry up during storage and the bulb will send out loads of fresh thick white roots! I'm not sure I'd peel all the layers back (although I do that prior to replanting) as that offers some protection from the bulb drying out a little. Don't cram a bunch in a paper bag, but rather...layer them if you can. I use that packing material that is like shredd cardboard. It lets air circulate and avoids rot and mold. If you layer them in boxes, then you can stack the boxes and be very efficient in your use of space. Don't forget...if you have tags for the bulbs, lay them with them in the box! OR..just get a bunch of surprises next spring! :-) Kristi

All I can suggest is that perhaps the specimen purchased was recently imported from the southern hemisphere. This is not an unknown occurrence, for instance stock of some ornamental trees and shrubs grown in New Zealand was being seen at retail outlets up here in recent years due to there being a representative of Duncan & Davies operating on the west coast. This included types like witch hazel shrubs that are also grown by multiple domestic suppliers - an item did not have to be something of a kind available only overseas to have been shipped in for this use.

Since your plumie has been in its current location all winter and is happy there (thus the full leaves), Id leave it be. If you put iti in your basement or try to make it go dormant now you may confuse your baby. I have plumies that keep some of its leaves all winter long with no ill effects, except for maybe spider mites in spring. In some parts of the world like Central Mexico or Central America Plumies do not go dormant and grow and flower all year long. Basically only Fruit and ornamental trees like Chinese Magolia, Flowering Cherry trees that are deciduous need a rest period and cold to make it fruit again the next growing season. I'm with Ed. While I do have a few dormants, (very few) they are [much] older cultivars. It has been my experience that while you may be able to coax a second full year out of them, usually dormants just dwindle away to nothingness. Even some semi-evergreens act as annuals here, depending on the amount of dormancy in the parents. I think that any dormants that would thrive in our climate are those cultivars that refuse to die no matter what you do to them.
