There is some evidence that indicates insect pests are drawn more to plants under stress then to healthy plants, so while that plant might have looked heatlhy it may have had a nutrient problem. What is the pH of the soil in that bed? How much organic matter is in that soil? How well does that soil drain? How well does that soil retain moisture? What kind of life is in that soil? Insect pest control for organic gardeners is not a one spray, once a week, program since any of those types of materials are very broad spectrum and will harm the beneficial insects as well. What is the problem? Does this require some method of control? What is the least toxic means of control I can use? Did that control measure work? Back to step 1. Any pesticide must be used with due care but the least toxic usually start with mechanical (squishing, cutting) methods and then progress to maybe plain water to maybe Insecticidal Soap to short lived substances such as Neem Oil products to maybe the pyrethrin based poisons, all of which do have the potential of harming the beneficials if not used with due care. Some of the botanicals that are no longer acceptable to organic growers would be Rotenone, Sabadilla, nicotene products and spinosad should be included since it is extremely toxic to the pollinators.

Hi Nessz Spring season is very different than the fall, for me cucumbers and squash do better in the spring, broccoli and lettuce do better in the fall, carrots and beets are better when colder and tomatoes do about the same except in the fall the big varieties don't ripen if planted too late. The problem might not be in the sun or shade, of course most veggies do better in full sun but they can take some shade in my garden. After you harvested the spring garden, did you replenish the soil? add amendments, fertilizers, anything? In the same area that I am, I have a tale of two gardens, my raised beds and other raised beds in another garden. Mine are producing abundantly and theirs not. They have a good sun exposure but they didn't change their soil from their original raised beds. Nematodes are always a big problem and they love sandy soil... Silvia

I currently do not have the money to buy grow lights for them You don't have to buy special grow lights. They just need light of whatever kind you already have. Any kind of plain old fluorescent light is what most use. You can also do them outside using the Wintersowing techniques detailed on that forum here. No it won't stunt them but it will give them weak stems and circulatory systems. Burying them deeper will help but it if far better to avoid the problem in the first place. Dave
