I planted the iris today in spite of the weather then Preened them. You might notice a few daylilies were already there, they are Lambertsons. Others will join them.

Ok, I had to go back and find last nights post to see how big this new bed is, I see 13x16. Lots bigger than my 7 foot square bed so I am sure you have lots more iris than I do.

Now did you have the landscape timber edges on this bed already or did you put them up yesterday?

That should look really great in bloom and by putting it half iris and half daylilies you really have two bloom seasons covered. It looks really good and with more daylilies will look even better. Great job!

We put the landscape timbers in yesterday. The topsoil and amendments were added today, and I planted the 42 iris between showers this afternoon. I think I have four more coming.

I think I will put some lilies at the very back of the bed. And if I don't stay off the lily auction, I may have it too full of daylilies too soon.

I did not plant that lilac tree - it was here when I moved in. I don't like the excessive shoots everywhere and would really prefer flowers to the tangled mess. I never would have planted a lilac tree with shoots in a confined flower bed. So I am afraid that the lilac may have to go. :( Why do I want a tree? Well, I want a tree to honour the memory of a loved one (as already mentioned), and I like trees because they just look pretty and add interest. Pretty simple reasons. I do think that they are prettier than a suburban patch of grass with no trees. I also like the idea of the shade that a tree offers. I can take another photo and post later. The house is right up against the deck, and other than two narrow patches of grass on either side of the deck (which are too small for a tree and have electric lines etc. under the ground in those locations), the photo shows the entire space that I have to work with. I am thinking of a snow spring crabapple that is about 25 feet high and 15 feet spread at maturity. The question is where to place it?

Well, I called another couple of nurseries including Habershams, and managed to find several 3gal there. Meanwhile, I've been trying to cobble together a landscape album to share which covers the last 3-4 years of changes in our yard, including the msot recent stuff like the absolutely amazing new retention wall that Brad Longanecker (aka 'vroomp' here @ Gardenweb, I highly, highly recommend him!) built for us this past couple of weeks. Found some pictures of my last grass-removal experience from last spring and the end results, thought I would share. I am sure people in my neighborhood probably think I'm completely nuts for happily cutting out a good 60% of the grass in my yard and replacing it with veggie gardens and plants, but ... oh well :)

Thanks Pam, and yes, I've already run into the problem with the white tags. In the past, I have used copper tubing with a P-touch label on it and that works great. Last fall, I had all these hostas potted up and was moving. I found those plastic labels on sale at Home Depot and bought several dozen of them. I used indelible Magic Marker to mark them. This was a temporary measure to get me through the move and the winter. Over the winter, the marker disappeared from some tags, and many other tags became brittle and broke off. Some even got moved away from the original pot. As a result, that center bed that you mentioned is the "Bed of the Unknown Hosta". There are a few in there that were at the new house... unmarked of course. The rest are ones with broken, blank, or missing plastic tags. I've identified a couple of them since planting, just by process of elimination, but some might never get identified. It's really sad. I would never EVER buy those plastic tags again and would never recommend them to anyone. All of these hostas will get marked with GOOD LONG LASTING markers before snow flies!

Thanks so much for your answer. The mulch is probably a couple of inches thick. The grass/weed is growing, as you can see in the photo, in the soil surrounding the edge of the bed where there is no mulch. It is really heavy in areas of mulch and of soil. The soil around the edge of the bed is regular yard soil that was tilled when making a spot for the bed, and it's even growing there. It is almost like these seeds were airborne. I looked up some of the different sedges, and I don't think it looks like this grass/weed as it grows. Any other suggestions as to what this might be???

I have been wondering how I will manage to keep my iris bed weed free. Will have to try the Preen even though I have never gone for anything like that. Its only the small square so it shouldn't be too bad!

42 iris planted in one day, wow. Here I thought I was doing so well with getting all my 29 Schreiner's iris planted all in one day last week.

I had at the same time I ordered from Schreiner's way back when, ordered 13 iris (11 TB and 2 BB) from a place called Zebra Gardens. Because they never acknowledged my order (paid immediately by Paypal) and never answered the numerous e-mails I sent asking when they would ship, I was sure the order would never come. Then Monday I got a UPS shipping notice and yesterday they were here. They sent me 21 iris so lots of bonus iris. But some of them not TB so I will just find some place to stick those along with the BB I had ordered. Meantime the TB will exactly fit into the places I have for iris to be planted. So I will have 44 TB iris. A very small drop in the bucket compaired to what you have.

I love Preen but from your photo it looks like you use a LOT of it. I don't use half as that much and it still does the job.
I'd love to see all your irises in bloom!

You probably already know you can't mulch iris or you will rot them. It is a lot of Preen, but I am just now getting a few weeds in my original iris bed from a year ago.

Daylilies don't get nearly so much Preen because they get mulch.

In Alabama, especially when we aren't in the midst of drought the weeds are just sitting and laughing at you...when you turn your back, they jump into your beds and run amok. At least that's my best explanation for what happens, and generous use of Preen delays it pretty well.

Well, I am glad you posted the picture after the application of the Preen. I had never used it and now I can see what you have done and get a better idea of how much to use.

That's a great new bed, and those irises will be gorgeous when they bloom. (I've gotten some lovely TB and Siberian irises from Iris City Gardens, Superstition Iris Gardens, and Argyle Acres. I'll be ordering from them next year, once I have new beds built to fill in.) The other part will fill up with daylilies in no time, I'm sure. Nice job!
