Catnip?

Last year I grew catnip for my cat, and he was not impressed with it at all. I figured, "Well, some cats just aren't into it, I guess he's one of them." Then I got dried catnip from the store and he was all over that.

So, clearly the catnip plant I got from the big box store was *NOT* the correct kind of catnip for getting kitty high.

Does anyone have suggestions on where to get the proper strain of catnip for the cat?

Did you dry your catnip first or give it to your cat fresh? Makes a difference.

wonderful use of cat mint.. but I have a better repellant for mice and rats.. Bounce sheets and/or peppermint oil. The mice don't like the smell of either. With the peppermint oil, you can get it at a pharmacy - take a cotton ball, shake a few drops on the cotton, deposit where ever you suspect mice to be Don't forget to replentish both Bounce & cotton oil after a few months. This works! We do it and haven't seen a mouse since!

That's a good point about what a cat could have done to it. We don't have outdoor cats, but there are several around that go nosing around in this plant. They nuzzle it and even roll on it. But the vegetation on this plant was two feet across. It didn't look like it got rolled on. So if it's about spraying, that's a LOT of spraying! There was one healthy stem left out of ten. I ripped out those ten, and we'll see what happens with the healthy one. That in itself is pretty odd. You'd think a disease would just kill the whole thing. What gives when one stem comes through unscathed? Yes, that's very true that containers in a hot climate make any plant thirsty. But even my catnip plants inside do the same thing. They want to be wet.

I have a ton of 4 o'clocks, too, but have never seen a JB on them. My four o'clocks are all white and planted in my white garden with all my white roses...white roses are favorites of theirs, so they may ignore the 4 o'clocks because of better things to choose from in there. Vaporvac, I have tons of birds of many varieties. My birds definitely don't eat the adult beetles, and although, I watch them pull earthworms out of the ground constantly, I've never seen them with a grub in their mouth. Maybe the grubs are deeper than the birds go...much to DH's annoyance, the armadillos dig fairly deep holes all over the place when they feast on grubs.

Seedling ID: catnip (Nepeta) or Agastache ?

I don’t know how these came to be in my planter that had pansies in it last year. At first I thought they were anise scented agastache, but cannot dected any anise fragrance. I have had both plants growing in my gardens. Can anyone identify these seedlings? I have to move them so make room for petunias. The odor seems rank, like catnip. I suppose I can take them to a vet’s office or cat shelter to test them out. Here kitty kitty kitty….

Bingo. That is your problem. Fresh doesn't have the same appeal. Dry it first. Variety doesn't matter. Just buy seeds that would be to grow catnip intended for herbal use - I'm not sure if there are ornamental varieties of standard catnip. Ornamental varieties never are the best herbs for the essentials oils and active constituents.

Some cats do prefer dried version but I've known cats who spaz over the fresh version too.

What is your cat's age? The young cats are less interested in the catnip, but older they go, more likely they'll go crazy. If your cat wasn't young when you tried to give it fresh catnip, then yeah, it might prefer the dried version.

try growing ornamental catMINT (nepeta), too...many cats roll and play in it for hours, finally falling asleep IN the plant itself, haha....

My cats like both fresh and dried. Were your plants in full sun? That seems to produce the stronger essential oils.
When I have to purchase dried catnip, I get the "tea" from the health food store as it is leaves and flowers without stem. The cats like it better than the powdery stuff that's packaged just for cats.

I have noticed that some catnip varieties are not appealing to cats. There are ornamental types that look attractive but lack the fragrance that cats enjoy.

Well last year I bought 6 Catnip plants from our local nursery. My cat ended up killing each and every plant within a couple months, but yes they seem to love the dried leaves more than the fresh. If I decide to try growing the plants again I will have a wire cage around the plant. One plant did self-seed in my lawn but I pulled it up as a weed before I realized what I was pulling up so now I have no plants.

I have it growing wild in my yard. It flowers white, not purple like the catmint, which is different. My indoor cats love it fresh when I bring some inside. They roll around in it and eat some of it, too. But cats have their individual preferences, so keep trying until you find something your kitty likes. They're worth it!

I definitely noticed a difference in the smell of the dried catnip I've bought and the fresh nip I grew.

Nepeta Cataria is catnip, other nepeta's are cat MINT.

Catnip is much more attractive to cats than catmint. It doesn't need to be dried, cats love it fresh in the garden.

Mine will eat half the plant, roll around in it, then fall asleep in it.

But don't just plant catnip for cats, it also makes a great tea and the bees love it.
