I have deer or rabbits eating my green beans
Comments (14)Petzold6596...I have the burgundy beans planted, That is what I planted last year also. I read online that squash planted next to beans or corn would deter animals because of the sticky plants. The critters don't like to get a taste of stickers (or whatever they are called). I don't blame them because it itches me when I pick or tend to the plants (same with okra). I break out! I looked today and nobody has any squash plants. And, I can't find any seeds either. I do have a big squash patch planted in another one of my gardens. So, if I plant squash, it would be for the pests. I plant radishes by my squash to deter bugs on those plants. I'm a believer in using natural controls....See Moredeterring deer by placing wire fencing on the ground
Comments (3)I tried this idea to keep dogs, deer, rabbits & foxes away from plants & shrubs, but the dogs, foxes & rabbits were dancing right thru in just a couple days, so I took it out. It may have worked for the deer, but once the snow came the wires would have been covered anyways. However, I've had success w/ a similar idea using wood lattice laid flat to deter squirrels from burying walnuts at the base of delicate or juglone sensitive plants. A couple of my dogs can smell recently buried items & become obsessed with digging them up, leaving a much bigger hole than the squirrel originally made. I'm not even covering the whole ground area - just scattering scrap pieces - and so far it seems to work....See MoreMarigold deer deterant?
Comments (1)depends on how hungry they are, and how tasty the plants are... deer won't eat what they dont' like (wormwood and marigolds are definately on the list) but it doesn't seem to stop them from munching three feet away from them... sounds like a job for 'liquid fence'...See MoreDeer & Moose scare/deterent...
Comments (7)I also use urine in the summer, again with very good results when the stuff is sprayed on plants ( I wear a mask ) ... though, one must be much more vigilant and often daily evening applications are necessary due to rain, doing so can become very tiring. We have many friends and visitors that drop by and smelling potent stinky urine containers all over the place doesn't go over very well, so I restrict their use to the fringes of the garden. Ten years ago, I had used several ScareCrow sprinklers to effectively protect the main vegetable garden, two of them had worked flawlessly for seven summer seasons! Though, when I had required new ones, none of the four that had been purchased over the last two years were at all reliable in their activation, even with expensive brand new batteries. Seems that ScrareCrow is no longer using the same reliable components as in the past and I contacted the company regarding such and also received a refund on the defective devices. Anyways, a strong high fence is always the best solution, though is expensive and many of us are unable to afford such, an electric fence is something I should look into....See MoreRosecandy VA, zone 7
