My First Try at Growing Hellebore from Seed

I want to confirm how to start Hellebore from seed. A lot of people rush the process along and they start growing the first year, is that right? I saw some posts where when you first get the seed, they are placed in a moist mix for a few weeks. Then I see they are in the refrigerator until they start to bust out of their seeds. We are having unseasonably warm weather in CT right now though, at least for April. I am a little worried that it might be too warm when I take them out of the refrigerator by the time the fresh seeds come through.

Somewhere else mentioned the "brick method." I have no idea what that is. :)

What is the easiest way for a new person to grow these? There is probably a great post in here somewhere that you can recommend. I read a few of them!

'by the time the fresh seeds come through' - Do you not have your seeds yet then and they will be fresh from this year?

Sometimes, sown immediately after harvesting, they will germinate without the long conditioning at a range of temperatures, but you can't count on that. Here in this mild, cool Z8, I sow in Fall for early Spring germination, leaving the pots outdoors

Thanks! I am getting one set of fresh seeds. The other is a dried pack from a seed company.

You know, I think it was Nil who convinced me to add more pumice/perlite to my Aloe sowing mix. Seeing his results in pure pumice gave me confidence to use a lot more grit in the mix and I've been very happy with that. I can't manage pure pumice or even too gritty of a mix because I like to be able to take a day off sometimes or forget about watering a pot for a few days. I think it's all about finding the balance that works for your conditions/practices. About the "x"... I only put it in quotations to separate it from my sentence. It can just be an x.... (Aloe 'Fang' x). If you knew the other parent, you could add that name after the x. Yes, you should use the x when talking about them. Specifically the x means "crossed with", if you were going to say it out loud. Yes, you should probably do a liquid fert. I don't think the green balls are doing much for you. To get the most bang for my buck, I use a straight 20-20-20 water soluble fert in a 10% dilution. That means I only use 10% of the recommended ratio, making my fert 2-2-2. I have mine mixed up in a spray bottle at 4x strength so that all I have to do is squirt a little into each watering can. 4 squirts = 10%, 5 squirts = 12.5%, 6 squirts = 15%... (all very specific to my equipment) It took some careful math to set it up but I wrote down my formula and now it's very easy. Alright, good luck! PS, my name is Ryan but that's leaked information:)

I am bumping this thread. I have hellebores in two areas of the garden; one with mature plants and the second in an area where I've been scattering seeds occasionally. This year, I found hundreds of babies around my mature plants. I transplanted around 300 of the babies over to the other area and now have collected seed to scatter in the same area. The new area has partial sun. We are in New England. My questions are: 1) Should I scatter the seeds, scatter and rake in lightly, or scatter and then cover with a light layer of something? I would prefer not to pot them and then have to plant them later. (Too much chance of me forgetting about them!) 2) When I see a baby ( around an inch and a half tall, with a 4" root), did that sprout from last year's seed or this year's? And as a followup, is the young plant (around 7-9 inches, with larger leaves), a 2 year old? Thanks, I do love these plants!

I was looking at seeds online. One company did say that they send you the seed close to collection time so that you can plant right away. They did emphasize the importance of using fresh seed. http://www.winterwoods.net/index_files/Seed.htm I don't quite understand yet how I am supposed to grow Hellebores. I was reading this post string: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/hellebore/msg0409281319719.html It seems that a period of cold is required before they start growing. In any case, that seed company has a range of seeds available for $5. I cannot see any shipping and handeling charges though. I dropped them a note to ask.

Love Baker Creek, but I also love Renee's Seeds - You can order online but I've found them available in local feed/farm supply stores in my area of So Cal. I notice different varieties in different stores (inland vs coastal), so I can't say for sure they are sorting them based on microclimates but it seems like they might be. I haven't had a bad crop with anything I've bought from Renee's at my local store. Also, not sure of your exact area, but there are an enormous number of really good nurseries in So Cal (especially in my area, San Diego County). I've found some really exotic things just browsing around...fun weekend trips as well.

I got my seed pack of Helleborus, A Orientalis Hybrid seeds today. There are 25 seeds, and they cost $3.75 (US). The instructions are very specific on the pack.

"Sow seeds in a moistened medium, put in a plastic bag and refrigerate for 3 weeks. Follow by using a temperature of 70-75 degrees F. for germination. Allow 30 to 60 days, pricking out seedlings as they appear. Seeds which do not germinat may need to go through a second period of indoor chilling."

There are outdoors instructions as well to sow in March in sterile medium... etc.

I'm not sure who packaged your seeds, but I don't think you will have successful germination with just 21 days moist chill followed by warmer temps.....that doesn't come close to my experience with helleborus over several years, several seed sources, including my own seeds. Were your seeds sent to you moist packed, where they may have already been given a moist warm period - that would explain skipping that step.

Two good germination databases:

Druse - moist warm 56-70 days, followed by moist cold 56-70 days followed by bring to 60 - 65F for germination in additional 30-545 days.

Clothiers - Helleborus orientalis, Pour hot water over seeds, let soak 1-3 days until swelling noticeable. Sow at 71ÂºF for 6 weeks or more. Move to 24-39ÂºF for 6-8 weeks (my own note - use refrigerator, not your freezer for this if not sowing outdoors). Then raise the temperature to 50ÂºF. If no germination in 4-6 weeks, repeat the cycle from the beginning. If the warm/cold cycles were not long enough, a new warm/cold cycle is needed. short viable seeds

Thanks for the post. No, these are the dried seeds. Darn it all. I stuck them in the fridge already too. Perhaps most of them go through a second cycle of cold.

I am expecting some fresh seeds when they are ready though. If you have the instructions for those, it would be great.
