Don't ya just love 'em?

I was wandering around the yard today, and happily surprised by all the plants that are standing up to the cold weather we've been having. They aren't just surviving, they are looking good! I never expected to be so happy after a garden walk in December.

One of my evergreen faves is Hellebore. They have been really showing their stuff this year. The Winter Daphne I bought in spring is also looking great. The Dracaena my mom told me was an annual is looking great, too (in a pot!) What are some of your tough favorites?

Mostly the usual stuff for me. The hellebores are looking good, but I think it's about time to get out there and trim off the old ugly leaves and let the new growth come out. Of course anything everygreen; azaleas, rhodedendrons, ligularia, loropetalums, cast iron plants, etc...

The one plant that's really catching my attention right now is the variegated alstroemeria. It pretty much disappeared during the summer, but is looking gorgeous right now. I think it may be time to divide it and have it in several different spots in the yard.

Don't worry I'm repressing plenty of tainted exploits from my youth, swiping the van was one I don't mind mentioning though because it was more amusing than criminal. Stealing a vehicle that has an empty gas tank,,, yeah that sounds like a real Einstein! LOL Still, running out of gas after only a few blocks was probably the best thing that could have happen to us under the circumstances. :)

I love finding out about sales at online nurseries the day the sale starts. Also, I've learned a lot about which cultivars work best for my garden. I also enjoy the debates of various philosophies of gardening. The best recent 1 was on the Trees Forum, the debate over proper pruning methods.

ruthie, You bet --- I get that prideful feeling every time I walk past my pantry/laundry room (which has no door in the doorway, the better to admire the rows of lovely jars of canned goods each time I go by!). But I think I like even better the wonderful feeling of anticipation and *relief* when I realize I can have something yummy made with fresh ingredients without doing much work NOW. Especially in the mornings --- sitting groggily over our coffee, my husband and I will often start to think wearily what do do about breakfast---we are NOT morning people, and I'll start to be deciding whether this is a day for something boring but easy (cereal, say) or something satisfying but that takes work (eggs or pancake), when I suddenly remeber "Hey, there's zucchini bread in the freezer and home-canned applesauce in the pantry!" It feels like a little miracle, every time.... Z

My granddaughter and her boyfriend moved about an hour away early this summer.Yesterday the doorbell rang and there they were. Made my day,made my week actually! My husband and I went shopping this morning and came home to find my grandson cutting our lawn.So proud of himself because he had just passed his drivers test and drove over here himself. It was wonderful to see how proud he was, but now that is four out of seven grandchildren that I have to keep in my driving prayers.
