Rebloomers do rebloom if they have enough sun and water. Also the two you mention need to be divided regularly (every other year) to be at maximum bloom ability. Newer daylily don't necessarily bloom better or more.

Hi Kate,

I don't find rebloom reliable in my climate ... my summers are (usually) not long enough or hot enough. So I rely on having daylilies that bloom early, mid-season and then late. Since it's so hot this year, I'm curious to see what does actually rebloom here.

Stella especially and Happy Returns are touted as re-bloomers. If yours aren't, then you probably need to divide more often, provide better growing conditions and more water. Stella is often in bloom 6-8 months of the year when grown well. I feel re-blooming is as much growing conditions as genes, though both are important.

I appreciate your responses. I guess I better try dividing my Stellas and Happy Returns, although some of them have been divided in the past because I wanted more plants--and I don't remember that they necessarily re-bloomed any better. Maybe they needed more water also.

Would it help to divide them now? Or should I wait until early spring?

I wouldn't mind also having a reddish or purplish daylily that re-bloomed well. Any suggestions?

I usually get a lot of re_bloom, and I am getting re_bloom on some that never have, and aren't touted as re_bloomers.
That said, I don't have your two, so I don't know about them.

You might try 'Woodside Ruby'. It is a nice clear ruby red. It clumps fast and blooms for a very long time. I would recommend 'Bela Lugosi' for a purple. Both are favorites. You can see pictures at Tinker's.

xokientx--Thanks for the suggestions. Woodside Ruby and Bela Lugosi are quite dramatic, aren't they! I take it that they are re-bloomers also?

Back to Stella and Happy Returns: is it too late in the season to divide them (to encourage more re-blooming)? Or is that better done in early spring?
