Need advice choosing Japanese Maple

My daughter wants to plant a Japanese Maple close to her house, white stucco walls, and a ESE exposure in Scarborough, Ont. She wants one that will stay relatively small and have beautiful red foliage in fall. I don't know much about them as I can't grow them here. Any suggestions as to what variety she should choose.

There are so many Japanese Maples to choose from. Fireblood and Firegold are two that work for me in Z5. They may get too big for your daughter's needs. You might try asking in the tree forum.

how tall do you want it to be. Do you want the weeping variety that stays 5 to 10 feet, or a tree that is 15 to 20 feet? Here are examples of both. The cutleaf weeping variety has a finer texture and shrublike habit. The 12 year old Bloodgood variety in the background is a medium sized tree.

I would leave it. It won't need much water to speak of in any case, having no leaves, though if the soil is dry on top before you go, do give it some in case of a freeze-up while you're gone. Even in summer, maples are better being allowed to get somewhat dry between times.

Just to add to Al's always excellent advice - I too grow a great number of trees in containers, most of which are JM's - I use a controlled release fertilizer (CRF) - Osmocote - when I first pot up and again at the beginning of each new growing season. I then supplement during the summer with a liquid now and again. For that I also use a Dyna Gro product (Liquid Grow rather than Foliage Pro) as it addresses the needs of ALL my plants, including the flowering and fruiting ones as well as the trees and shrubs. I may use only 3-4 times a season on the permanent tree plantings to supplement trace minerals - the Osmocote takes care of the primary nutrient needs for the entire season.

Thank you all for the great advice. He's coming over to finish cleaning up, a process that was delayed by wind and rain, and I've already told him about the JM; that we could try cleaning up the damage and hope for the best next year, but that I expect him to be responsible for the damage if it doesn't bounce back. We took lots of pictures. We'll see what happens. In the meantime, once the remainder of the tree is removed, I'll try fixing up the JM and hope for the best. Darned thing is that I planted this JM about 16 years ago, when it was just a few feet tall; it took that long for it to grow to the 7 or 8 feet it's at now. Would hate to start over. Najoba, wow!...that's an awful situation. Having trees removed costs a small fortune. I know there are risks involved and it's hard work, but there's no reason for shoddy workmanship, then sneaking off as if nothing happened. I liked the guy (owner) who did my work. He had to work in tight quarters between the house, the road, and electrical wires. Accidents happen. But I wish he told me about when he called me after the job was done.

Just get a large enough root ball, keep it hydrated and in the shade until you replant. You may want to wait until fall to replant.

The maple in question is Inaba Shidare.

I love the Acer armur, it is not a big tree. In the spring there are mill.of benefisial insects.
