Trumpet Vine

I have the opportunity to take some of my dad's trumpet vine and have some questions before I plant it in my yard. I am very aware of its invasive quality, and actually welcome it in the area that I am thinking of planting it (an old chain link fence in the far back yard, well away from other plants and the house). I know this will sound stupid, LOL, but in addition to attracting hummingbirds, will this vine also attract a lot of bees? I'm also considering planting it along an old pump shed - no longer in use, just a frame that the vine can destroy at will if it so chooses - but the shed is sort-of next to the driveway and on the other side of it I have a small perrenial bed (where my miracle coreopsis is growing...LOL).

1) Will the vine attract so many bees that it would be unwise to plant it next to the driveway where we'll be getting in and out of the van and

2) Do you think it will grow under the pump house and strangle my perennial bed?

As I just spent some time this evening yanking up sprouts, I would never recommend to anyone ever planting this menace. However, you do get plenty of hummingbirds. I've never noticed many bees, but lots of ants. Seriously think twice before planting this monster. It doesn't spread evenly, you'll find sprouts everywhere, and if you don't keep up with it at least a couple times a week it will take over everything.

Thanks drakens :) As I said, I know it's an invasive one - how far out from the original are you finding the sprouts and how long has your original been planted? I'm just curious now about how vigorously this grows.

Hi, They are different. Trumpet vine is a native perennial vine while Cypress vine is an annual. There is also a slight difference between Cypress Vine and Cardinal Climber even though their names get interchanged often (even among the seed companies, reputable ones at that!). Both are annuals, flowers pretty much the same but the foliage is very different. I personally like the foliage of the Cardinal Climber better. I would do research on the perennial Trumpet Vine if you decide to go with that one. I had planned on growing it but upon further research, I was frightened off. I live in warm zone 8 and Trumpet vine sounded just a tad bit more of a hearty grower than what I am willing to deal with. But like I said, I'm in a much different growing zone than you. Besides, a neighbor has it so I'll just enjoy hers from afar ;) Here are some links for Cardinal Climber and Cypress Vine. Michele - Congratulations on your Trumpet vine buds/blooms. I have three TV's that have been along my fence for a good 5+ years I bet, and this year they took off like crazy - finally. I haven't looked closely at them for a few weeks, so now I am going to go out and take a good close look. After your news, I now have hope for mine. It's been so long since I put them in, I don't recall if they are red/orange or yellow. I winter sowed some and have a good dozen or more little babies still waiting for a home (they're still in the W/S container). Need to get them a home! Again - congratulations Sandy

My neighbor has a 12 foot high wood fence about 60 feet long. It has a well established trumpet vine that grew over the fence and into my yard to a depth of about 3 to 4 feet and down to about half way on the fence. And had been there for many years. It's full of wasps. It comes up all over my yard so I have to keep putting monsanto stuff on the ones coming up almost every day. My neighbor came to the alley one day and told me I "could trim it back a little if I want to". So well, I can't trim it because it's full of wasps. Made me feel a bit angry, her telling me what I could do on my property..though I didn't comment on it to her. I went to the ciy hall for advice. They said I could spray it and cut whatever I want to to what's on my property. So I sprayed the thing on my side with roundup and then spent $250 having it cut back to the fence so nothing in on my side ...My neighbor is furious and threatening to sue. There is nothing lost since she never speaks to me unless there's some kind of problem. I hate that trumpet vine. So does the neighbor have any legal case?

I have had my trumpet vine for three summers now. It has not grown anywhere except where I planted it. It is right next to a rose and perennial area and has not invaded that area yet. I have not noticed that it attracts bees, but it does attract ants, at least it did before this year. I haven't noticed a lot of ants on it this year.

A friend of mine has been fighting trumpet vines for years. His next door neighbor had it growing on the garage. The trunk was at least 5" thick. The neighbor removed the plant when a new garage was built. My friend is still trying to get rid of the vines that keep shooting up everywhere in his garden....even on the other side of the house far away from that garage. I would not plant it anywhere on my property.

Oh my God....I'm sorry I'm reading this so late. My trumpet vine was also planted near a driveway and it is ruining my driveway as the plant is coming up through the 4" thick asphalt. NEVER I have tried everything to get rid of it and it continues to get worse.

Wow - I planted it expecting that it would be very vigorous......Not so....it's never gotten more than 12' tall and hasn't flowered for me...planning on doing some changes this year, but it's been a pretty one for me so far
