Georgia Perimeter College native plants

Got this email today from GNP at Perimeter College!

We're clearing out our potted plants for the winter. Everything is discounted 25%, with even bigger discounts for orders over $200 and on selected plants, through October 28. During the last two weeks in October, sales will be held on both Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 10 AM to 2 PM. That?s October 18, 21,25, and 28. After October 28, we?ll close up the shop until March, 2007.

All sales are at the Native Plant Shop at the Native Plant Garden, Georgia Perimeter College, Decatur Campus, 3251 Panthersville Rd., Decatur. If you have questions, leave a message on the Garden voicemail at 678-891-2668 or call Regina's home number 404-286-8913.

We have almost 300 species of plants this Fall! Some of my favorites are Evergreen Blueberry, Indian Pink, American Snowbell, Loblolly Bay, Azalea Bakeri, Log Fern, Barbara's Buttons, Sabatia, Stoke's Aster, Leavenworth's Coreopsis, Buttonbush, and Winterberry, both male and female.

The best plants are in short supply, of course, so come early!

There are still two Wednesday Lunch and Learn sessions coming up. On October 18, Ted Stephens will talk about Native Shrubs. On October 25 it will be either George Sanko talking about Native Ferns or Don Jacobs on Fall plants. Lectures are from noon 'til 1 p.m. There's a free garden walk at 10:30 both Wednesdays. Come early and stay late to buy plants while the shop is open from 10 - 2.

I'm offering a new class on both Saturdays, October 21 and 28 called Five Senses in the Garden. This is a family program especially for children ages 4 and up and anyone young at heart wanting to explore the garden with all five senses. Children must have an adult with them. Come one or both days at 9:15. The class is FREE and will go 'til the shop opens at 10:00.

As always, you're welcome to visit the Garden anytime during daylight hours. We'll be happy to see you. We're ready to spend time talking about plants with you during our scheduled sales and programs. Please call me ahead at 404-286-8913 to arrange a different time if necessary.

I thought they just had a garden. If I had known they had a native plant shop, I would have journeyed down a long time ago. Thanks for sharing that.

I have gotten some great plants from GPC's nursery, including some Itea (Virginia Sweetspire) on clearance because it had been in the pot too long. $2 a piece and they have done very well in their new home.

That sounds like a really nice selection. I guess I am not on their email list, so I really appreciate your posting this.

I used to live in Macon, Georgia, and your post got my attention. I remember the summer of 1977 because I had just graduated from high school and was doing remodeling work on the outside of my parent's home before I started college. It was the most miserably hot summer I can ever remember. I looked on wunderground.com to see if my memories were accurate. For much of that summer, both the temp and relative humidity were over 90. We had several peach and plum trees, which had wonderful fruit that summer. My mother was pealing peaches to put in our freezer, and whenever I went inside to cool off, I would eat so many peaches, she complained that she could barely peal them as fast as I ate them. I know we had one Elberta, which was our latest bearing peach, with a variety of other cling and freestone peaches. The trees were hanging so heavy with fruit, I had propped up all their limbs to keep them from breaking. I did not know then about thinning the fruit, so the limbs were so heavy with fruit they were about to rip off the trunks without support. I drove metal fence posts into the ground around each tree, and strung wire between the posts in a criss-cross star to support the limbs. Even though I had not thinned the fruit, the peaches were still good sized, ranging from tennis ball to baseball size. We had a really heavy bloom that spring, because January 1977 had been very cold. Several days in January 1977 set the all time record lows for Macon, and several days in June and July set the all time record highs. The trees were kept mulched with copious amounts of composted straw and horse manure. The summer before I had started growing organically for the first time. I had just learned about composting and was a zealous convert. I lived in Macon, just north of Peach county where the commercial peach growing belt begins, and also lived in Cordele, "The Watermelon Capital of the World" which is just south of the peach growing belt. I can testify that the summers are both hot and very humid. Maybe your peaches are just homesick and not in a "New York State of Mind". ;-) Greg

Native plant sales this spring

Just a reminder that the Georgia Native Plant Society's annual plant sale will be this Saturday in Marietta from 10 am to 2 pm. McFarlane Nature Park 280 Farm Road SE Marietta, GA 30067 We haven't had the sale for 2 years due to the drought, so we are pulling out all the stops to have a huge sale. Trees, shrubs, perennials, ferns, bog plants - all native. Plants were rescued from construction sites, donated by nurseries and members, grown from seed and some were even purchased just for this sale (several hundred native azaleas, for example). We'll have extra people on hand to help answer questions and give suggestions. Have a mystery native plant? Bring a piece and we'll try to identify it. I'll be hanging out in the tree/shrub area - stop by and say hi.

Welcome to Georgia! I would recommend a tour of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, located on the campus of the U of GA, there in Athens. It is a large garden, covering 300 acres (121 hectares) and one section is devoted to GA native plants. Take a notebook and record some of the plants you find attractive and wish to plant. Most of the spring flowering natives will be dormant at this time of the year, so you will need to schedule a return trip next spring. There are several nurseries in the Athens area that sell native plants, Goodness Grows & Thyme After Thyme are 2 that I'm familar with. When in the Atlanta area, you may want to visit the Peremeter College Native Plant Botanical Garden, easily accessible from I-285, near the intersection with I-20,East of Atlanta. The Atlanta Botanical Garden, at Piedmont Park, intown Atlanta, is another resource. Georgia has a very active Native Plant Society that is a great source of information about native plants. Rb I don't have a sure fire method of combating mosquitos without chemicals, no one does, but eliminating standing water around the premises reduces breeding grounds, wearing white or light colored loose fitting clothing when outdoors, covering as much exposed skin as possible, will reduce your attractiveness to the biting females. I bought plants at the shop this year when my friend and I went to the gardens. I'd been wanting to go for a long time, but just hadn't made it. Many of the plants they list above where not part of the selection offered when we visited. They propigate like crazy there!!
When we went, the nursery was apparently not opened, but the gal who was working there let us in to buy some plants. I will caution that their "leavenworth's coreopsis" may not actually be that, but a native bidens. I purchased one, and if you look up photos of the coreopsis, there are some differences. The strongest point I'd make is that mine is doing well in the nastiest, dry soil!!! So I highly recommend this golden yellow gem they are selling. It's so cheery!

I can't wait to add many of the shrubs to my future native shade garden.

They've been having a spring sale and a fall sale, each lasting a few weeks with a couple of sale days per week. They also offer lectures and seminars on native plants.
