Michigan Gourd Patch 2 meeting

Hi all,

If any of you are in the Michigan area we are having our first gourd Patch meeting for the SW Michigan area. The meeting is this coming Saturday, 15th December, from 10am to??? We will have a pot luck lunch. There will also be a class on making a sculpted Santa ornament. For more information drop me an email and I will send you directions.

Hi NatureGirl,

Yes - we have the meeting schedule for the year posted on the calendar on the Michigan gourd group - I will be more than happy to give you the location. We are having a meeting on the 5th April in South Bend at the Indiana Gourd Show and we welcome anyone interested to join us. I am in Kalamazoo - where are you located? Feel free to drop me an email!

Hi Rich, Thanks for the information - I look forward to meeting you and Brenda at Kokomo. I do appreciate you volunteering to come to Michigan ... we finally said "enough talk ... let's set a date and have a meeting in Lansing". Karen (who will be at Kokomo and I am sure you must know) found a place to meet for free - a banquet room in a restaurant and the only thing we HAVE to do is have a meal while there. We scheduled around the noon hour. I know it is really short notice for you and so close to the show - you must be so busy now - but if you can make it that would be wonderful. It would be wonderful to have someone there who could talk about experiences in a gourd patch. I will post the meeting, time, date and location on here separately. Aha Helen - too bad you don't have the address - perhaps you can find that house again the next time you go to Quebec (needle in a haystack trip!) - perhaps the guy will giv eyou some seeds - or better yet - some of the dry gourds. My kids built me a pergola for Mother's Day this year - I tried to grow some short handle dippers - put in 10 plants - the rotten deer ate all but two - and two are the most pitiful things you ever saw. They did grow to reach the top of the pergola, went along about 3 feet, had a few flowers and that is the end of that! They are just sitting there looking sad - no gourds! Tomorrow I will be planting several clematis vines on the pergola and I will give my gourd seedlings to a friend who has tons of sunshine and 40 acres! Let us know about that gourd when you figure it out! (sure looked like a caveman club to me!) Rita in Michigan

Hi all, I'm behind again. I've got 2 days worth of cards to list. From foreverrecyclereuse I received round cantaulope,Broccoli and Grand Rapids lettuce. jas.il sent poppies, chives and Buttercrunch lettuce. Panhandle_seed_swap sent a huge package of foxgloves, I would love to plant each one of them. Tularosa Market melon. Dirt Daddy sent a mother lode. There's moneymaker tomato, White lisbon onion, marigold mix, lettuce mix, Super beefsteak tomato, evergreen long white bunching onion, gourmet blend lettuce, bibb lettuce, Aunt Gertie's gold tomato, German Johnson tomato, Abe Lincoln tomato, and Rutgers tomato. Nikkineel sent a wonderful card with a snowman. I received Castor beans, echinacea cheyenne spirit, Cannibals tomato and zinnia swirls. jhgarden9 sent marigolds, Korean melon, and cucumbers. smitties sent sea holly and sombrero echinacia. and last but not least, roper 2008 sent red barn tomato, pink poppy and red and yellow speckled marigold. If you are willing to rent a trencher, you can easily DIY your own in-ground sprinkler system. Becomes more doable if you only need a few zones. I think it would be somewhat difficult to pipe it to the house water but everything else is very doable. Parts aren't expensive and a fraction of what you'd pay someone to install it. Even if you have a sprinkler system, it behooves you to maintain it yourself. As mentioned above, $75-100 for a blow out every fall? $60 to replace a $10 rotor? Heck, a sprinkler system makes a total renovation so much easier. Tired of sweating over dollar spot, dark green, etc. etc. every year? Newer cultivars are so much better than common varieties in performance and disease resistance.

Thanks for the email! Looks like the next meeting is near a favorite kayaking spot of mine. I'm in the greater Grand Rapids area, SE side. I'm checking my calendar and may be there.

You are welcome! If you go kayaking down the Thornapple River then you go right by the home where we will be meeting in March ... only I bet you aren't in a kayak on that river right now ... perhaps a flat-bottom ice boat would be more appropriate!

It would be great to have you come to the next get-together - bring along any of your gourd art to "show and tell" and bring along a sack lunch... most of all bring along another gourd friend! I look forward to meeting you soon!
