Grubs are (mostly, anyway) inactive over the winter. I noticed a very few when digging in the gardens that were awake, large, and in charge. They didn't live long. ;-) You would have been more likely to see the issue at the end of last summer or the beginning of fall if it were grubs, but it's still not impossible, of course. If you can dig and verify that it is grubs...well, do that and get back to us. Late winter and (now) early spring have been really wet and irregular this year. The temperatures were swinging wildly through March, too, to the point that two of my butterfly bushes frost-heaved right out of the ground, breaking the base roots as they went. Those base roots are as thick as my thumb... I've never seen anything like that before. It's possible, though also not likely, that heaving and cracking damaged the grass in a few areas. I noticed one or two areas, quite small, where that happened, but I have a newly renovated lawn and it's a bit thin on the southwestern side. You can reseed, although spring isn't the best time to do it. If it's a bluegrass lawn, it'll fill itself in, eventually. 3 square feet is about 1.7 feet on a side, a bit much for KBG to do in a single season, although feeding it will help. Fescue and rye won't repair that fast or that well and will require reseeding. You could pull plugs from the inevitable areas where the grass grew into your gardens or onto the foundation. Keep them watered for about a month and they should take.

I have a groundcover Sedum that is so tuff it'll grow on concrete without soil and I know it to be a fact because I have it growing on a concrete slab on an old well not in use anymore.I planted some around the well and it started growing on top of the slab without dirt,And it looks beautiful.It takes Heat,Sun,Shade, whatever you put it in, It will take.It has star shaped yellow flowers that cover the whole plant, it blooms the first week of June.If in full sun it will bloom for a long period, If in shade not as much, But it will still look pretty because of it's color and shape.If your are interested in any I would be HAPPY TO SHARE!! Thank you both achnatherum and praireigirlz! A combination of a couple Overdams near the steps, and a border of the Hameln continuing down to the driveway I think will work very well here. I was a bit lost, but now I am found! LOL... honestly, thanks for the suggestions. I think the K Foersters are bit too tall for this spot, but I think I have another spot for a few of them. I do like the look of this grass, and I prefer grasses that have a chance of holding up under some snow over the winter. Lining that walkway with the Hamelns, with some annuals in a bed to widen the planting area should deter the postman (and others) from making paths through my lawn! I now envision about 5 Hamelns along the walkway, leading to two Overdams, the last of which would be planted alongside the first step of the porch off the railing, on a part of the garden bed that then runs under a picture window. That should (I hope) flow nicely into that garden bed which has the zebra grass along with other plantings. Thank you so much for the suggestions!
