Red Japanese Maple

I am a landscape designer needing two specimen red leaf jap. maples, perhaps 'Bloodgood'. I would like around 7'-8' tall, nice shape and full. All the nurseries that I buy from are waiting for new stock to arrive in November or later. Does anyone have advice on where I can find nice specimen japanese maples?

Have you tried the following:
The Maple Farm/Decatur
Homeplace Gardens/Commerce
Pike's Wholesale/Tucker
They usually have specimen size JM's

There is a nursery that specializes in Japanese Maples in Gwinnett. It's on Rogers Bridge Road east of Peachtree Industrial. I can't remember the name, but they have wonderful maples and evergreens.

Hi Kent, I am very interested in your Japanese maple seedlings. I am not sure what to offer you. I have lots of plants, and we have lots of oaks, and I have Harry Lauder's Walking stick, smoke Tree, Red bud, Vitex chaste tree,Royal Paulownie, Dog wood,and Mimosa tree, and others. What do you suggest under a flaming red Japanese Maple?

Depends upon your personal taste. I would not go for the black mondo as it is too dark/ brooding under a redleaved tree. Prefer something brighter, A greygreen would be subtle contrast, with an Geranium renardii (what is the soil like, by the way.), Some golden green cheerful contrast, with some medium, solid goldengreen Hosta (August moon), How important is an winter aspect, do Hellebores grow in Z5 . As Ken points out - no it would not work Acer palmatium rootsock is needed for most Japanese Maple grafting. Sugar Maple is Acer saccharan ( sp) and will not be compatible. Propagation of japanes maples is not very easy. Under PERFECT conditions cuttings may work, Grafting will get better results, but even with years of practice, greenhouse, heatpads and humidifer, I still only have about 50% sucess rate. Have - Dwarf Red Japanese Maple Tree 4+ years old

I have a dwarf Japanese Maple Tree in my front yard that hasn't grown in height in over 4 years. It stands about 3 feet high and came with the house, it leafs out nicely every year but I have plans to put something else in its place and it needs a good home. I will remove it from the ground for whomever wants it once they confirm they will take it, you pick up. It would make a great container plant or go right back in ground too. It is just now starting to bud so leaves will follow soon. I would happily accept any bulbs, flowers, veggies, etc in trade. Would love to have gone this weekend so I can get out and weed the bed and dig it up at the same time. I am in the Beaverton/Aloha Area.

Thanks esh, I couldn't remember the name. I bought a small waterfall maple there and it's doing great. It's a fun place to just walk around it because they have such a different variety of shrubs and trees.

Thanks for all the nursery suggestions. I deal with Pike Wholesale and they are the ones that won't be getting any from their sources in Oregon until their leaves fall off and they can be dug. I have wanted to visit Home Place and Bannister Creek but haven't yet. Bold Spring N. I have not heard of. Thanks; this will keep me busy checking out what they have for awhile.

You can see their inventory on their website. The latest mailer showed they have a bunch of specials on JM's. They're are still a few hundred bucks a piece though. Just FYI, Pikes Whol gets a lot of trees from them I'm told. (talking about bold spring)

Greenhouse Nursery on Covington Hwy east of Decatur has lots of specimen sized Japanese Maples, as well as lots of smaller hard-to-find varieties.
