my bird-brained neighbors

Not joking either ... they really are bird-brained. Had a couple of robins make a nest on my balcony.

Had to snap this pic of mom at night. She wouldn't stick around for me to take her pic otherwise.

Nice pics -- we had blue jays nesting above a light fixture on our deck 3 years ago. They successfully raised 5 babies and didn't seem to mind us sitting a few feet away. Sadly, I haven't seen many jays since with West Nile virus taking its toll.

Do you have many squirrels or other wildlife (deer, opossum, ...) in your area? If so, there's a good chance some of them are behind the crape myrtle trimming. Squirrels eat or experiment with all sorts of things, especially during the intervals between their primary fruit and nut foods. They remove several flowering tips from our crape myrtles every year... as well as an occasional bedding plant, turf runners, and small branches or bark from other trees. Some birds do eat the seeds, though they don't seem to be a favorite with our year-round locals while alternatives are still available. Sorry you're living with the frustration of stuff disappearing from your property. A security camera could help figure it out, just be sure to get one with good low light capability in case the "critters" causing your losses are nocturnal. I had 3 river birches close to the front door at my last house. A large group of black birds started gathering in those trees and they were extremely noisy. We always had the door open when we were home but would have to close it because of those birds. I started going out there and spraying the hose up into the trees trying to get rid of them. Oh boy, that made them come more often! This went on for a couple of weeks maybe. Then one day, I heard them squawking something awful in the backyard. I stepped outside to find one of their babies down on the ground and my cat was closing in on it. I screamed no to my cat, grabbed him up and took him inside. Those birds never bothered me again. I always felt like once I started spraying them, they were aggravating me more on purpose and then when I saved their baby, they stayed away out of gratitude.

How can i keep my neighbors from picking my fruit trees?

Many years ago I had same issue. It was a corner lot and the bus picked up the grade school kids from the block at that corner. My fruit trees were on the side of the house. Fruit almost ripe and then all gone! We put out a BIG sign next year that said "fruit sprayed with insecticide. Do not eat". Then we dusted the trees with talcum powder. It worked! Nobody stole our fruit. Talcum powder is taboo these days so if the trees are dwarf dust them with white flour. It will look just as bad and hopefully keep the kids away.

Well, we've gone round the world looking at possibilities. I think that if you are going to embrace Tudor, you do it up right. Classic is classic usually because it works. I suggest you use Partim's rendering of Tudor with the brown trim. I agree that you should add a few more pieces of trim over the garage as illustrated in the picture. It makes it more Tudor, not less. I also like how painting the garage door brown, the same color as the trim, and no trim on the garage door unifies the look and minimizes the big door expanse. It looks less carnival than the current pink. It's pretty funny, but I vote for making the home more Tudor. In England, there are areas where they mix the stones with brick. It's quite the classic. When I was a very little girl, I remember having to ride in the car with my mother as she drove my brother to school each morning. We would pass through a very affluent neighborhood that was filled with Tudor style houses. I used to call them ice cream sundae houses because they looked like vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup dripping down them. Yummy.

Our robins raised their first clutch of eggs on the row of shed tools hanging on the wall. Mama flew out of the shed every time we came in. Once they hatched it was very quick as they fledged(grew feathers) and flew. My young daughter dug some worms every day and fed them. I couldn't believe the growth between morning and evening! They flew around the shed one day and were gone the next, very interesting to watch. HOWEVER, I now keep the shed door closed, since Mama is trying to get a second nest going. I have removed the shreddy things and mud she put up there as nest starters three times. I believe she has given up on that location now, been a couple days since any new stuff. Shed is too hot with summer sun, babies would be roasted! We have another robin nest going in the tree outside the bedroom window, about halfway thru before the babies fly off.

What incredible pictures! In our old house (we moved a year ago)I always put a hanging basket of impatiens on our porch next to the front steps at the end of May. Within a few days we would have a sparrow starting a small nest tucked into the flowers. The process you showed would then commence. This went on for about 7 years, like clockwork. But I had a hard time seeing things. I would check every year to find out if the nest was there and where it was, so I could dribble water in from the other side of the pot, and occasionally I would pull aside some leaves to investigate, but mostly I tried to let them alone. I almost got bombarded from Mom a couple of times as I stood there.

It was so much fun every year. It ended when my sister brought me a fuchsia, and I felt I had to hang it front and center to show my appreciation. We never saw the family again. Thanks for letting us see this transformation.
