Upcoming native plant events in Atlanta metro area

On October 1, the Georgia Native Plant Society will be holding its 11th annual symposium. See the link below for more info on speakers, times, fees, etc. Bill Cullina is just one of the featured speakers.

October 6 through 8th is the Fall native plant sale at Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell. Sounds like they are featuring native fall perennials, but I'm sure they have some trees and shrubs too. I'm sure you could call ahead to inquire if you are looking for something specific.

I can't make it this year, but have been to many of these and strongly recommend them as a source for natives. I've purchased at least 6 varieties of native azaleas in addition to perennials, ferns etc.

I didn't want to post this earlier and have the message move down on the list but what kinds of trees and other plants are typically offered at the native plant sales and what sizes?

We will definitely have native azaleas there to support the presentation on those. GNPS is actually the vendor for those, purchasing them directly from a nursery that specializes in native azaleas. We will have other vendors with a mix of plants: perennials, ferns, and shrubs. I think you could get a lot of plants there and enjoy the presentations as well. If you cannot make it there, the GNPS native plant sale (which is huge) will be April 21st at Piedmont Park. But I hope you can attend the symposium.

satellitehead - I can not speak for the the perennials or ferns, I barely looked. We were there early and it was busy. In a short time the azaleas were getting bought out. I barely looked at them either as it wasn't what I was buying - just noted for a future plan. I can say that the shrubs I purchased are in great shape, but none have leaves, they are just breaking dormancy which is exactly how I want them. Bought a bunch of sticks with buds I did. I can say that I spent $111 on 5 shrubs at a large nursery last Monday - two anise, 2 Leucothoe and a red buckeye, buckeye was $30 for a 1 gallon (I wanted three of them and settled for one). The same nursery had the oakleaf hydrangea pee wee 1 gal for $24, GNP had them for $9.50. At GPC I got the same size Leucothoe, anise, another 5' buckeye and a slew of other stuff for a lot less and in equal condition or better because I don't feel that they are hothouse babies. I don't want my viburnums leafed out quite yet, particularly with the ice balls we are getting pelted with today. I also received a mail order of viburnums this week which was $275 for seven plants (with shipping). Two of them were 3 gallons, the rest smaller. They are in great shape, but at GPC they were $8-10 each in harder to find species. Everything I buy requires shipping costs out the ears - usually 25%, plants are small, so for me the GPC is outstanding. I would love to order from Nearly Natives in GA, but it's too much on shipping with sales tax, or a 4 hour drive each way. GPC is over an hour away. My yard has zero in it and I need (erm...want maybe...nah, need) a lot of foundation plants. I guarantee the leucothoe and anise at GPC were commercially grown, they did not fit in.

Well, despite the rain, the sale was very successful. I think it was our best ever with many people arriving late to find that most of the plants were gone. We got rained on several times, but people kept buying. Thank you to those who came. I saw nosierosie and her daughter, but I'm sure that many of you were there. Yes, I seem to remember you had family last year. It went very well and of course the weather was great for it. Lots of people came for the event and plenty of people came upon it just by being in Piedmont Park. I understand ABG was having an herb sale and some people might have done both. Don't be put off by the line. The sale occupies two sides of a very broad path so the crowd quickly gets distributed as people stop to look at trees/shrubs (the first area) or head straight for the trilliums. There are plenty of people with dogs, many of them because they just happened to be in the park and wandered through. Lots of park visitors bike, walk or skate their way through the sale. We only have a sale of this magnitude once a year. We do sell a few plants at meetings (every other month at ABG) and also at the symposium. You are welcome to attend a meeting as a guest and buy some plants while you are there. The meeting topics are posted on the web as the date gets closer. The next meeting will be May 9th (a Wednesday) at 7 pm in Day Hall at ABG. The topic is not yet posted. As for the sale, some stuff ran out early - jack in the pulpits and foamflower were gone by 10:30, but some trilliums and heuchera were there until the end. The two sabal minor palms (seedlings) did not sell. I think people who don't know are still unsure about having palms in Atlanta. We had tons of Virginia sweetspire (our Plant of the Year) and it all sold, but maple leaf viburnums were still available to the end. All but two of the native azaleas sold and we had a lot of those. So, I think it was a success. We (the volunteers) had lots of fun, met a lot of new people and got to talk plants all day. Can't ask for much more than that! :) Hope to see you there next year.

At the CNC sale in Roswell, it can be anything! I don't think I've seen anything over 8 feet though. The fellow in charge of the nursery is the nicest man, give him a call any time and see what he's got planned. From their site:

"The greenhouse is open to the public by appointment only. If you would like to make an appointment to visit the greenhouse, please contact our horticulturist, Henning von Schmeling at 770-992-2055 ext. 229."

Henning is a great guy and loves to talk about native plants. if you chat with him and ask him what he has that's interesting, he may walk you through the greenhouse and show you a few things that for one reason or another he's not ready to put in the sale. Trees and shrubs I've bought there (none very big) include: bottlebrush and red buckeye; carolina silverbell; american styrax; buckthorn (why I bought it I'm not sure); grancy graybeard; spicebush; and a variety of azaleas: piedmont; florida; flame; oconee; alabama; hammocksweet.

@laxfan I am considering buckthorn for a hedge to hide an underdeck area. What did you not like about it?

Buckthorn is a very invasive, non-native plant that crowds out natives and thus deprives insects, and the songbirds that feed on them, of food.

myca99--- you may want to go for nandina, azaleas or mahonia... to hide that underdeck area. I have a nice stand of nandina, about 6-7 ft. tall. Any seedlings that sprout are easy to pull out. It stays put, has big pannicles of white flowers that turn to bright red berries in the fall. My neighbor has some mahonias that are about 6 ft tall and a bit more see-through than the nandina. Azaleas are always nice. The George Tabor azaleas have pink and white flowers, stay evergreen and slowly increase in size. Good luck with the planting!
