How can you tell when it's time to pick gourds?

Hi all;

Our gourds made it through the 120+ days of summer. Now that's it's dropped a few degrees they're really taking off and developing lots of fruit, with the help of bees and hand-pollination.

Most of the comments I've seen say to pick gourds after the first frost, when the vines die back. Problem is, we have no frost, so I don't know how long they'll continue to grow.

Without the vines dying, how can we tell when to pick our gourds?
